Match Preview
After a very enjoyable Easter Weekend covering the last two home games of the Buckland Athletics season, its back to action from the South Devon Football League. A Fred Hewings Cup semi- final between Paignton Villa Reserves and Chudleigh Athletic 3rd.
Six years ago to the very day the 23rd April 2016 I was at Whiterock and covered the game between Villa Reserves and Barton Athletic, a game Villa won by three goals to nil.

I have already covered one Paignton Villa Reserve game this season on the 23rd October when the faced Babbacombe Corinthians in a league match. Sadly another game in the SDFL that did not have an official match referee, but stand in Brandon Nash did a fine job in the middle. Villa lost the match by four goals to two.

How Did Both Teams Reach The Simi-Final?
Paignton Villa Reserves had a bye in the first round of this cup, in the second round they were awarded a home walk over Galmpton United Reserves who had pulled out of the South Devon League. In the quarter final they enjoyed a fine home win over Babbacombe Corinthians Reserves winning the game by six goals to two.
Chudleigh Athletic 3rd faced Barton Athletic Reserves at home in the fist round and won the game by four goals to three. The information on The SDFL website shows that Chudleigh did not featuring in the second round of the cup. In their quarter final game Chudleigh were at home again this time against Buckfastleigh Rangers Reserves and also won that game by four goals to three.
How Are The Teams Doing In Their League?
It has not been a very good season for Paignton Villa Reserves who currently are at the bottom of the Division Two table on 12 points after playing a total of 17 games. They have won just 3 games, drawn 3 and lost 11. Along the way they have scored a total of 35 goals, conceded 70 giving them a minus 35 goal difference.
Chudleigh Athletic 3rd plays in the 3rd Division and is currently in 6th place on 22 points after completing a total of 19 games. They have won 7, drawn one and lost 11, scoring a total of 51 goals, conceded 65 giving them a minus 14 goal difference.
Not even going to try and predict the winner of this game, but I have a feeling it will be a close one. It will be both clubs last chance of any silverware this season and both will be giving the match all they got to reach the final.
Match Report
Two evenly matched teams battled from the first whistle until the very last one, as far as cup games go this one was right up there and had everything you need in a well contested entertaining game.
Newly qualified match referee Paul Sharples who did a first class job in the middle blew his whistle to get the game underway. Villa made the slightly better start, but the first shot in anger was an effort from the edge of the Villa box by Samuel Clarke. Adam Taylor in goal for Villa did well to save low down by the left hand post.
Chudleigh’s Mathew Rushton found his legs trapped by a Villa player and when he got free he got up and appeared to put his hand in the face of the Villa player. Sam the Villa manager was jumping up and down demanding a red card to be shown, but the game was very young and it looked worse than it was and the referee took the sensible route and had a word with both players.
Christian Williams wearing the number 14 shirt for Chudleigh was played clean into the box and got a low shot away and once again the Villa keeper did well to block the shot.
Villa’s Ash Beetschum hit a good powerful shot from the edge of the Chudleigh box, but the shot got blocked on route to the goal. Villa’s Tom Armstrong hit a 20 yard effort over the crossbar and shortly after went on a good run to the edge of the box, but his shot was well held by Aaron ( unable to make his surname out) in goal for Chudleigh.
Villa went into the lead, a long ball found Charlie Thomas who worried the Chudleigh defence all game with his pace, the keeper came running off his line to the edge of his box and Charlie played the ball past him. He did follow the ball in but no further touch was required.
The game became end to end for a while, Chudleigh’s Henry Stubbs fancied his chances from 30 years out, but the Villa keeper made what looked an easy catch.
Villa then went two goals up Villa’s danger man Charlie Thomas was running into the Chudleigh box again at pace and was brought down by the keeper. The spot kick was taken by Ash Beetschum who hit it low to the right hand side of the goal. The keeper went the right way but the ball went under him into the back of the net.
Chudleigh got a goal back when Mathew Rushton was brought down just inside the left hand side of the Villa box. Christian Williams took the spot kick and was again the Villa keeper Adam Taylor did so well to get down low and block the shot with his body. But the ball came back off him and Christian had followed his shot in and was able to fire home the loose ball.
The referee blew up for halftime with Villa winning by two goals to one which was a fair refection on the first half. The game got back underway; Villa’s Charlie Thomas was played in again and forced to the keeper into making a very good save.
Up the other end and Christian Williams hit a good shot from the edge of the Villa box that was well held by Adam Taylor.
Villa went further in front, Jack Wilkinson who took a knock just before then end of the first half and looked like he might not start the second half got the goal. A strong run out wide and when just inside the left hand side of the box he hit a low powerful shot into the far corner of the goal.
Chudleigh won a free kick out on the right hand side, the ball was fired into the Villa box and Christian Williams rose the highest and got a good head on the ball, but his effort just cleared the crossbar, I do not think it would have counted if it had gone in as the linesman was flagging for off-side.
Villa made a substitution, off came number 11 and on went number 11, well when he got the shirt of the back of the original number 11. End of season and kit missing, I expect still on one of the players washing line.
Chudleigh started playing some of their best football of the match; neat passing that eventually lead to them getting their second goal of the match. I counted about ten passes before Henry Stubbs picked out Mathew Rushton who fired a low shot across the keeper into the far left hand side of the goal.
Chudleigh were now well on top as they looked to get back onto level terms and maybe force extra time. Chances were now few and far between for Villa, but Charlie Thomas did have a half chance from a corner, but hooked his shot over the crossbar.
Match referee heard enough from a Villa player who was not part of the game at that point and marched over and booked him and ordered him away from the pitch. Meanwhile Sam was still going on about the non red card lol.
Chudleigh pressed hard for the last five minutes of the game, from a corner Christian Williams rose well and headed the ball at goal, but his effort just went wide of the post.
The referee blew up for the end of the match and Villa 2nds had reached the final of the Fred Hewings Cup. Chudleigh made a real game of it and their players gave all that they had.
Back in the dressing rooms and the Villa boys were singing at their tops of their voices “ why why why Delia” you would have thought they had won the final itself.
A very enjoyable game to watch, my thanks go to both managers for filling in correct numbers on the team sheet and also to match referee Paul Sharples for all his help.
