CSWPL Div1 East Brixham V Liverton 16/08/14
Final Score Brixham AFC 3 LIverton United 6
I watched Brixham’s opening game last season against Ipplepen. They won that match by four goals to one and I was so pleased their dreams came true and they won promotion from the South Devon League too the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League A few weeks later I watched Liverton having twenty three goals scored against them by Stoke Gabriel. To be fair the club was in a mess with players refusing to play and I said at the time I had every respect for the lads who did pull on a Liverton shirt and at least tried to make a game of it.
Today’s game presented the opportunity to see Brixham in action in a higher league and the progress I know has been made by the Liverton club. As a neutral I would have put money on Brixham winning today after their excellent start to the season winning their first two games and topping the table. Well I know why I never bet on anything as Liverton ended up as fully deserved winners. They were simply bigger and stronger when and where it mattered and put away the early chances that came their way. If they had put away with the same ease the chances they created in the second half, they would have won by an even higher score.
Liverton started the game slightly better that Brixham and after a couple of near misses a goal was coming for sure for the visitors. Carl Rivers hit a shot with power that was not that far off target and then a another shot just missed the right hand post before a low ball was played into the Brixham box for Tom Reeves just to tap home from about six yards out.
Brixham started to get their passing game together and a neat ball over the top of the Liverton defence played in Josh Webber who volleyed his shot well wide of the Liverton goal. But very soon after this Brixham managed to get themselves back on level terms. A corner was swung towards the far post and I believe it was Jason Beynon who rose above everyone to head the ball home.
Liverton very quickly restored their lead after a very strong run into the left hand side of the box by Ollie Booth, he shrugged off two challenges and looked up and played a square ball acoss the box to Ollie Aplin to fire home. It was soon three one to Liverton and questions has to be asked of Dan Gillard’s keeping. From where I was standing it looked as if Livertons Carl Rivers headed to ball goal ward. Dan had a Liverton player standing in front of him but it looked like all he needed to do was pluck the ball out of the air. He seemed to miss the ball and it just fell into the net.
Brixham did come close before the brake of pulliung a goal back, first Scott Troth found the ball at his feet inside the Liverton box and hit a good shot that was well blocked by Jason Kinsmen in goal for Liverton. Brixham’s Dan Rankin worked hard to make some space to get a shot away that hit the base of the right hand post.
The ref blew up for halftime and the big question was could Brixham stage a comeback in the second half. Sadly they soon found they were even further behind, a corner came in and was headed at goal. Dan Gillard managed to palm the ball down but it fell at the feet of Carl Rivers who blasted it over the goal line. Ollie Aplin should have made it five for Liverton after finding himself in the box with a one on one with Dan Gillard, but he hit a very poor shot that was never going to beat the keeper.
It was Brixham who actually scored the next goal in the match to make the score two goals to Brixham and four to Liverton, I could not see from my angle who got the header that beat Jason Kinsman but I think it was possibly Sam Green, but I stand to be corrected.
Was the Brixham comeback now on the cards? Well they only went and scored again and it was a good goal. A great low hard ball across the box to the right hand side where Sean Kenny was waiting after bursting a gut to get there, he hit a fine first time shot that flew into the net.
But Brixham then made a cardinal sin, they were still celebrating nearly being back on level terms and straight from the restart Liverton went down the other end and made it three goals to five in their favour. It was that man Tom Reeves again who passed the ball into the Brixham net breaking the hearts of the Brixham players and supporters.
Brixham pushed high up the field to try and get back into the game again and in doing so left so much space for Liverton to attack into Tom Reeves could have score three more goes and knows he should have but it was left to Ollie Aplin to get goal number six for Liverton. A very neat goal that he started and finished himself.
A good game to watch and I’m sure Brixham will learn from today’s game, I did feel they looked poor in defence at times and it proved costly for them.
