Final Score Foxhole United 3 Chudleigh Athletic 0
I thought it was time I covered my fist game of the new season in the South Devon league and after checking out today’s fixtures, this is the game I fancied most. The last game I attend at Belfield was way back on the 10th November 2012, that day Foxhole beat a poor Teign Village side by seven goals to nil in a Division Three game.

Today’s game was the first of the new season for Foxhole in Division One of the South Devon League after they finished up as champions of Division Two last season. What a final game of the season it was against Ashburton who I expected to win and who only needed a draw to become champions themselves. Foxhole on the day was the better side and fully deserved to be crowned the champions, winning by four goals to three in the end.

I can’t remember ever covering a game featuring Chudleigh Athletic, but as a young boy growing up in Newton Abbot, I spent many a happy day in and around Chudleigh itself. The last time I was there my late wife Carol and I had a real adventure that created a memory that will live me forever.
For anyone interested the story of that day can be read here

Back to the football
My prediction this morning was a final score of three goals to two for Foxhole; I got the Foxhole score correct, but not Chudleigh’s. What a great game this was and credit to both sets of players for giving their all for the whole ninety minutes. The referee Martin Williams did a first class job in a game that was full of very strong tackles an not only did he keep the game flowing, he only felt the need to book two players the whole game.
Foxhole fully deserved today’s victory, but Chudleigh did deserve to at least have got one goal for all the hard work they put in. heads never dropped and right up to the final whistle they kept going looking to get at least a consolation goal.
The game kicked off and we did not have to wait too long before the first meaningful attack by Foxhole. Jamie Tibbo on the edge of the Chudleigh box hit a good shot that only just went wide of the left hand post. Foxhole then won a free kick out on the left and the ball finally came to Rob Willicot who got a shot in on goal, but this time the ball just went wide of the right hand post.
It was not all one way traffic and the Chudleigh number five Mark Halse ( Malse?) just inside the Foxhole box forced a smart low save from Scott Bond in goal for Foxhole.
Duncan Shrubb wearing the Chudleigh number two shirt got himself into the refs book. He thought he had been fouled right on the touchline and when nothing was giving decided to kick the other players ankle, a silly and needless booking.
Foxholes Curtis Clarke had a good chance to open up the scoring for his team when he got on the end of a long through ball on the left hand side of the field. As he got near the box he looked up and saw the Chudleigh keeper storming towards him and he hit is shot a bit early and too far out and had to stand and watch it fly over the crossbar.
From a corner Foxholes John Bolus headed over but I felt a goal was coming and did not have to wait too much longer for it. The first goal came on 42 minutes after the ball was played once again to the left hand side deep in the Chudleigh half. John Bulus did well to hold the ball up as he waited for Ashley Hoare to sprint to the edge of the box before laying the ball on a plate for him to fire home with power and accuracy. Sadly I was too busy writing down the details of the goal and did not get any shots of his celebrations. Not sure how many summersaults he did, but they sure looked very impressive.
That was it for the first half and right at the start of the second half Chudleigh came close to getting back onto level terms. Samuel Cockram inside the right hand side of the Foxhole box hit a left footed half volley that only just went wide of the right hand post.
It was soon two nil to the home side after a great run and shot by Jack White, his shot got blocked and the ball fell kindly at the feet of John Bolus to fire home, a goal he fully deserved for the contribution he made for his team.
Up the other end and another chance fell to Samuel Cockram and this time his effort was on target, but Scoot Bond made a fine low down save. Then George Walne burst into the Foxhole box, but his shot flew over the crossbar.
Curtis Clarke was making a number of good runs for Foxhole down the left hand side and one such run he played a great ball to Jamie Tibbo who hit a good shot that was well saved.
Grant Willicot got himself booked after taking out a Chudleigh player on the halfway line with a full body check, shortly after this he left the field after asking to be subbed as he did not want to get another yellow card and sending off.
Foxhole won a free kick out side the box on the left hand side. I thought the ball was going to be played to he far post, but Luke Danby who had came on as second half sub, hit the ball low towards the centre of the goal. To be honest I thought the keeper should have made the save, but perhaps the ball might have bounced just in front of him making the save more difficult.
That was it and it was hand shakes all around when Martin Williams blew his whistle for the very last time, a great game of football played just the way I like it to be played.
On today’s performance I think Foxhole have a good chance of doing very well again this season. Good luck to both teams for the rest of the season.
