Final Score Plainmoor Ladies 3 Okehampton Argyle Ladies 0
I thought it was time I went and covered a local ladies football game and part of that exercise was to see how far the ladies game has progressed since I last a covered a ladies game over four years ago.
I was pleasantly surprised just how ladies football has come on and what a joy to watch a game where players did not fall over and pretend they needed to be rushed to some emergency ward 10 hospital. These ladies are not afraid to get stuck in and tackle hard and when one player did stay down after a nasty clash, you knew she was hurt.
Both of today’s teams had played one league game so far this season, Plainmoor Ladies lost by five goals to nil away to Morley Rangers. Okehampton’s first game was a home tie against Brixham Villa, a game they won by a single goal.
I was expecting based on those results to see an Okehampton Argyle victory today, but then I had not seen either team play before and right from the off, there only looked one winner.
I believe Okehampton Argyle had a few players missing, but nothing must be taken away from the way the Plainmoor ladies played. Neat passing, good movement and a defence that send out a loud message “you are not getting past us”
It was all one way traffic during the first half and no real surprise when the Plainmoor ladies went in front. They won a corner on the left hand side and when the ball dropped into the box it was not cleared and eventually fell at the feet of Roisin Skilton who blasted the ball into the back of the net.
The Plainmoor ladies number 12 went bravely into a tackle but clearly got a nasty knock and had to leave the field of play. Up until that point she was having a good game.
Plainmoor ladies number nine came close to getting her time a second goal as the ball came across into the box from the right and close to the goal line, sadly she could not get a toe on the ball to steer it over the line. Then their number 14 hit a powerful shot from all of 25 yards that was well saved by the Okehampton Argyle keeper.
The Plainmoor ladies captain number six also hit a good long range effort that just went wide of the right hand post. With only minutes left of the first half a chance went begging for both sides. The first chance fell to Plainmoor ladies number 14 who made a good run into the left hand side of the box but fired her shot just wide of the right hand post.
Up the other end the only chance of the whole half for Okehampton Argyle was missed after their number eight beat four players on her way into the box but then was not able to get any power into her shot.
That was it for the first half and the Plainmoor ladies maybe could have gone in at halftime three or four goals up. They completely dominated the second half only this time put away two of the chances they created. Goal number two was scored by Katie Sawyer.
Their third goal was scored by substitute Abigale Daines after a good low ball was played to the edge of the Okehampton Argyle box from the right hand side. She hit a good clean shot first time then went through a defenders legs into the back of the net.
Barry blew up for the end of the game and then the heavens opened up, well at least it held off all afternoon for what was a great game of football to watch.
Well done both sets of ladies and my final word to the Plainmoor ladies is. Do not fear your next match against the Buckland ladies, play as well as you did today with the same amount of effort and work rate, you never know you might just pull off a shock result. Every team is beatable.
