Final Score Plainmoor Ladies 1 Buckland Athletic Ladies 11
After enjoying covering my first ladies match last Sunday for a good number of years, I decided to do the same today. It was an opportunity to see just how good the newest team in the league Buckland Athletic really are.
A good number of the Buckland team were playing at a much higher level for the Torquay United Ladies team. I have heard a good number of stories why the said ladies no longer wanted to play for that club and if half of what I have heard is true, then I do not blame them.
Buckland are a fine club and I always enjoy going over to the Heath to cover first team games there, it’s a club that is on the up and up and now for the first time they have added the new ladies team. Some of the players are big names as far as Devon ladies football goes.
My only real concern has been just how good are they going to be this season with such high profile players, it has had to be the case they start back at the bottom again. Are we going to see a season where Buckland whip every single team they play? To be honest that is the real fear.
Buckland won their first game of the season beating Budleigh Salterton by ten goals to one, but Budleigh Salterton beat Shaldon Villa by a massive thirteen goals to nil in their first game. Does this mean that Buckland are twenty three goals better than Shaldon Villa? I will await the result of that match with interest.
After their fine win last Sunday against Okehampton Argyle, the Plainmoor Ladies took on Buckland with a few key players either injured or away, making today’s game that much harder for them.
It was good to see Mr Buckland himself big Roy the chairman at the game to cheer of the Buckland ladies. Before today’s kick off a minutes silence was held for Oliver Croker the young football fan who so tragically lost his life last Saturday while watching his brother play in a match between Bampton and Bradnitch.
Before I start my match report, I would just like to say a big well done to the Plainmoor ladies who were under the cosh for most of the game, but never gave up. It was clear today that Buckland are just too strong for this league and I would put money on them finishing the season with a 100% win record.
I have never seen Laura Gough in person, only pictures of her in the paper, while she was not as big as I thought she was what a player she is. Such great movement, the ability to turn on a sixpence and an eye for goal. It would be a bit unfair to call today’s match the Laura Gough show, but she did play such a massive part in Buckland’s victory.
The game was only minutes old when she put her side in front, a long ball played up field straight down the middle by L. Thompson played Laura right into the box to lob the ball over the keeper into the back of the net.
Laura was a constant threat in and around the Plainmoor box and drew a foul that resulted in a penalty kick. The spot kick was taken by Louisa Stentiford Crook who made no mistake giving Emma Ayres in goal for the Plainmoor ladies no chance of making a save.
The only chance for the Plainmoor ladies in the first half came about when Roisin Skilton was strong and won the ball and played Abigail Meyer in on goal, but sadly her shot went wide of the right hand post.
It was all one way traffic and my player of the match Emma Ayres was forced into making so many good saves. Bucks sent the ball into the box from a corner out on the right hand side, the ball crashed against the crossbar and a mad goal mouth scramble happened, but Bucks could not force the ball over the goal line.
Laura Gough made it three nil to Buckland when she received the ball out wide on the right hand side, when she got into the box and from a tight angle, she fired the ball home at the near post.
Buckland’s Kate Hine found herself on a one on one with the Plainmoor keeper and maybe should have scored, but Emma Ayres stood up big and strong and pulled of a good save.
Laura Gough turned wonderfully in the Plainmoor box and hit a great shot that was going into the top right hand corner, but Emma Ayre pulled off the save of the match pushing the ball over the crossbar.
Goal number four for Buckland was scored by Laura Gough again, she played a neat one two with one of her team mates that got her in behind the Plainmoor defence, there was only ever going to be one outcome.
That was it for the first half and Buckland could have had a much greater lead if it had not been for Emma Ayres. The second half kicked off and goal number five was not far behind. A cross come shot out on the left by Hayley Chamberlain hit the far right hand post and went in.
Goal number six was by? Yes you guessed right, Laura Gough, the ball was played to her in the box with her back to goal. She turned so sweetly and fired the ball low just inside the left hand post.
Emma Ayres was forced into making another great save, this time a great strike by Hannah Brook and just after this Helena Ruffles almost on the Plainmoor goal line, hooked the ball somehow over the crossbar.
The Plainmoor ladies heads might have been starting to drop a little, but they did get a much deserved goal. Roisin Skilton was just inside the Buckland half and received the ball, she held off one very strong challenge and headed for goal. Once inside the box she coolly slotted the ball into the right hand side of the goal.
That was the only time the Plainmoor ladies got into the Buckland half during the whole of the second half. Laura Gough hit the side netting, Bucks Kate Hine had a shot saved close in and hit the rebound to her wide of the right hand post.
It was soon seven one when Kate Hine took a shot from the edge of the area on the right hand side that went over the keeper into the back of the net. Then eight one, a very similar goal to number seven.
Goal number nine was scored by? Laura Gough, her first effort was well saved by Emma Ayres, but Laura was able to get onto the loose ball and fire it home. Goal number ten was scored by Helena Ruffles who had missed a earlier chances that came her way, this time a neat turn and shot went in for her.
The final Buckland goal was scored by Hayley Chamberlain, but she has to thank Laura Gough for the big part she played in it.
I hope the Plainmoor ladies were not to downhearted after the referee blew his whistle for the final time. Most teams in this league are going to be on the end of hidings from this Buckland side this season.
