Final Score Brixham Villa 16 Shaldon Villa 0
My third Sunday on the trot covering a ladies fixture and I have enjoyed everyone of them. How many men’s games have I watched where players on the losing side kicked over water bottles as they left the pitch or worse. Today with out their two key strikers, Shaldon Villa Ladies took a hammering, but huge credit to them as they never once gave up during the game and came off smiling.
The kick-off was slightly delayed as the Shaldon keeper Abi Couch needed to have a badly sprained wrist strapped up and despite her injury and the number of times she had to pick the ball out of the back of the net; she battled on until the halftime.
It was all one way traffic from the start and with the game just six minutes old, Brixham were awarded a penalty. I think everyone watching was shocked when A Distin pointed to the spot as It did not look a case of hand to ball, rather the ball hitting the defenders arm. Up stepped Nikki Caunce who hit the ball low inside the left hand post.
Brixham’s number ten Vanessa May hit a good shot just inside the Shaldon box that just went wide of the left and post. Shaldon took a throw in deep in their own half and Jess Vickers should have just put her foot through the ball and cleared but wanted to much time and got robbed of the ball by Leanne Robbins. Leanne burst into the Shaldon box but rushed her shot that ended up going well wide of the right hand post.
On twelve minutes it was two nil to Brixham, their star player Leanne Hunt was played a great ball out on the right and she headed into the box and fired an unstoppable shot into the back of the net. Twenty two minutes it was three nil, the ball was robbed again from a Shaldon throw-in on the right hand side of the box and Leanne Hunt lifted the ball over the Shaldon keeper into the back of the net.
Just one minute later it was four nil, Brixham won a corner out on the left hand side when the ball came it a shot hit the crossbar and fell down kindly at the feet of Keri Ventre who hit the ball first time over the goal line.
Just after that came the biggest talking point of the game, a straight red card for Shaldon’s number eight Hannah Pattle. It came about after Shaldon’s first meaningful attack, Hannah got on the end of a through ball out wide on the left, held off a strong challenge and fired a powerful shot into the back of the net. The referee looked over and saw the linesman had his flag up for offside and disallowed the goal. Hannah did use the F word but it was not directed at the referee she was just a bit angry for having her goal disallowed. A word in her ear maybe? A yellow card at worst, but A. Distin pulled out the red card and sent her off. I have heard far worse covering men’s football that was directed at the referee and no red card was produced; it just made Shaldon’s task that much harder.
Five nil and once again super striker Leanne Hunt got it after being played into the box and coolly putting the ball into the back of the net. Goal six was scored by Vanessa May after getting on the end of a good through ball hitting her shot with the outside of her right boot. Before the break Brixham added two more goals to their halftime total, goal seven was scored by Kelsey-Jo Taylor and the last one being a fine volley by Keri Ventre.
The second half was a repeat of the first one, all brixham and a further eight goals. Goal nine a great ball was pulled back to the edge of the Shaldon area for Nikki Caunce to blast home. Goal ten Leanne Hunt again, this time just inside the area lobbed the substitute keeper.
Keri Ventre got goal number eleven for Brixham, number twelve was scored by Vanessa May, but her next shot after being played in on a one on one with the keeper hit the woodwork. Thirteen nil and I just started to get the feeling that everything Leanne Hunt hits finds the back of the net.
Up the other end and a rare trip into the Brixham box by Shaldon and from a corner Lauren Barlow was forced to tip the ball over her crossbar.
After a poor scuffed clearance by a Shaldon defender the ball fell at the feet of Leanne Robbins who hit a clean first time shot into the back of the net. Goal fifteen was scored by Kelsey-Jo Taylor after the ball rebounded to her following a shot by Vanessa May that was blocked.
The final goal was scored by Lady of the match Leanne Hunt after the Shaldon defence failed to clear the ball out of their box.
A good game to watch with not one bad tackle in it, big shame about the sending off and I hope the Shaldon girls are not to downhearted about their start to the season, they will learn and grow as the season progresses.
In the Brixham team today I saw a side that will at least give Buckland Athletic a good game, they have plenty of goals in them and if they can find a way to stop Laura Gough getting in behind them, you never know.
