Final Score Galmpton United 6 Waldon Athletic 0
With so many good looking ties being played today in the Throgmorton Devon Premier Cup, it was hard to pick which one to watch. I finally decided on this game as I felt it would be a hard fought game with plenty of goals and action in it.
Last season Galmpton were hoping to reach the latter stages of this cup completion, but ended up going out in the second round. In the first round they drew Shamwickshire Rovers away and when the ninety minutes were up the score was one all. At the end of extra time the score was two all and the game went to a penalty shootout that Galmpton won by four goals to two.
They got a home draw for the second round against the University of Exeter, a game they went two goals behind and eventually lost by three goals to two. Today playing a team from the Premier division of the South Devon League might have looked a much easier passage into the second round.
Last season Waldon Athletics’ first game in this cup was in the Preliminary Round at home to Elmore 2nds. At the end of ninety minutes the score was one all, but Elmore won the game in extra time by three goals to two.
This season Waldon played another fixture in the Preliminary Round at home against Upton Athletic, a game they lost by three goals to one and ending any further progress in this cup they thought.
It was discovered that Upton Athletic had played an ineligible player against Waldon Athletic and were removed from the cup completion, meaning Waldon would take their place in the first round proper against Galmpton.
In the Carlsberg south west peninsula football league division one east so far this season, Galmpton has played ten games. They have won five, drawn two and lost three. They have scored twenty five goals and conceded seventeen and currently sit in eighth place in the table.
In the WBW Solicitors South Devon Football League Premier Division, Waldon has played three league games to date, winning one drawing one and losing one, scoring a total of nine goals and conceded five and sit in seventh place in the table.
Last Saturday Waldon played in the first round of the Herald Cup against Teign Village from the third division. At the end of normal time the score was two all, but Waldon ran out winners by five goals to three in extra time.
Could Waldon Athletic of the South Devon League Premier Division defy all the odds and beat Galmpton United from the Carlsberg south west peninsula football league division one east at their place? Or would Galmpton simply be too strong for the team from the lower league?
The last few Saturdays have been sunny and warm, but today it was cold, windy and very dull, thankfully the game wasn’t. The final score was a bit harsh on Waldon who gave their all from the beginning right up until the final whistle. The big real difference between the two teams today was the front men, the two Galmpton forwards sixteen year old George Dandridge and Liam Moseley were just too much to handle for the Waldon defence.
The game started off very evenly with both teams not really being able to create much in front of goal, the Waldon defence was looking strong enough and they were very much in the game.
The first real chance fell to Galmpton who had won a free kick out close to the right and touchline. Reece Moseley fired the ball low into the Waldon box; Richard Whatman was only able to scoop his shot over the crossbar. Then from the edge of he Waldon area, George Dandridge took a shot that just went wide of the right hand post.
But it was Waldon who so nearly took an early lead when Sevvy Rielly arrived on the left hand side of the Galmpton box with the ball at his feet. I was expecting him to take a shot, but instead he tried to play a ball into the box to a team mate. The ball took a wicked defection of a Galmpton defender and was heading towards the back of the net. Ken Griffiths, who was going the other way, somehow dived back to his right and managed to touch the ball onto the post. It was the save of the match.
Just two minutes later it was Galmpton who took the lead when a long ball was played up to Liam Moseley that dropped to him in the left hand side of the box. There was a defender goal side of him and there looked no real danger. But Liam was able to turn his man and from a tight angle fired the ball low into the far right hand corner of the goal.
Two minutes later again and Liam got his second goal with a neat shot inside the box that found the same right hand corner of the goal. I felt at this stage of the first half that Waldon were a tad unluckily to be two goals behind, but they ended up going in at half time three goals behind.
Another good long defence splitting pass put Liam Moseley in on a one on one with the Waldon keeper Ryan McVitty and he placed the ball between the keepers legs into the back of the net.
The second half got underway and Galmpton won an early corner, the ball was cleared to the edge of the box and George hit a good shot that forced a fine diving save out of Ryan McVitty.
Waldon were still playing the ball neatly on the deck, but could not find those killer passes up to their front men. Galmpton were looking to hit the ball long in behind the Waldon defence for Liam Moseley to get on the end of. One such long ball saw Liam in on goal, but the Waldon keeper came steaming out to greet him. Liam managed to get the ball past Ryan, but the ball hit the left hand post and stayed out.
Galmpton won a free kick on the right hand side just outside of the area; George Dandridge took the kick and curled the ball into the far left hand side of the goal. It was soon five nil when Liam Moseley turned provider neatly laying the perfect ball off to George Dandridge to fire home past Ryan McVitty into the back of the net. Galmpton then won another free kick out on the right hand side and the ball ended up being played low into the Waldon box where it was fired home by Neil Stephens
Six nil down but Waldon were not prepared to give up and getting a consolation goal was something they deserved at least. Brook Ward had a great long cross field ball played to him that he tried to hit first time, but the end result was the ball went well wide of the right hand post.
That was it, an enjoyable game to watch and the team from the higher league go through to the next round, with as I said, a slightly flattering score line.
Many thanks to the referee Ryan Hedges for all his help today and both clubs for their help as well.
