Match Preview
The preseason has ended and now it is finally time for some league action and what a lovely day to go and enjoy a game of football. I have covered a game at Bovey before last season when they played Exwick Villa, a game Bovey won with ease in the end by four goals to one.
Exwick had started the game much better than Bovey and went in at halftime one nil up, but the game turned in Bovey’s favour in the second half when Jamie Orchard came off the bench. Jamie Orchard is no longer at the club after deciding to join Sidmouth Town.

Bovey’s preseason games have been a mixed bag of results and the manager has learnt a lot about some of his very young players. Bovey were beaten by six goals to two away to Ashburton from the South Devon League. Plymouth Parkway then beat them at home by six goals to nil.
Bovey found no problem finding the back of the net playing against the Plymouth & District premier league side Weston Mill Oak Villa, who they beat by seven goals to one, Bovey had continued with a number of under 18s and 2nd team players in the line up for this match after their impressive performance against Buckfastleigh.
The final score against Watcombe was Bovey Tracey 2 Watcombe 2, but both clubs have had to do a rebuilding exercise for this season and the game ended up being abandoned a few minutes early when Bovey striker Salmons received a head injury in a totally accidental collision.
I have only even covered one of Totnes and Dartington games before on the 7th February 2015 against Brixham AFC. Totnes & Dartington were having a very poor season and Brixham had already beaten then by three goals to nil at Walls Park, so I was expecting a Brixham win.
It was a cold dull day and very hard to get good quality shots and to my surprise Totnes & Dartington won the game by four goals to two. Brixham had been reduced to ten men but T&D’s Angus Wilson had a fantastic game and almost won the match for his team on his own.

Totnes & Dartington have a new manager for this season who I’m very sure will do very well at the club. Tim Porter did not get the results at Stoke Gabriel his management skill deserved and I’m sure things will be so different for him at his new club.

Match report
As I left Paignton small droplets of rain were hitting the windscreen, but it turned out to be a very sunny afternoon with the temperature hitting 24 degrees. As this was the first league game of the season when the referee blew his whistle, both teams were joint top of the table. When the referee blew it for the last time, one of the teams was still top of the table on goal difference and the other at the very bottom of it.
I thought for a long time during the first half that the game was never going to have even one goal in, how wrong was I. Both teams started nervously and the game for most of the first half was a rather scrappy affair.
Bovey won a throw in out on the left hand side and the ball was thrown at the feet of Gav Collins who was on the edge of the Totnes box. He turned neatly and got a shot away but he failed to get any real power into it. As the first half wore on Bovey started to get on top and were enjoying a great deal of success attacking down the right hand side of the pitch.
Totnes and Dartington came close to opening up the scoring when they won a free kick out on the left hand side. The ball was floated to the edge of the Bovey box and headed towards the back post. John Rimmer got to the ball first, but hooked his shot high over the crossbar.
Bovey were mounting more and more attacks down the right hand side and Calam Livingstone from just inside the right hand side of the fired a great shot at goal and Dan Woods in goal for T&D did so well to tip the ball over his crossbar and behind for a corner.
Both sets of players were starting to pass the ball a bit better, but it was another bovey attack down that right hand side that saw Jack Salmons flash a shot across the goal that only just went wide of the left hand post.
T&D gave the ball away in their own half close to the halfway line, one pass later the ball was on the edge of the T&D box and Callam Livingstone hit a good powerful shot that was well saved down low by Dan Woods.
T&D thought they should have been awarded a penalty kick when Liam Collins hit a good shot from the edge of the Bovey box that was blocked on its way to the goal by a Bovey defender. Was it hand ball? Hard to say from my position but the referee either was unsighted, or called it correctly. As a result Liam Collins then hacked down a Bovey player in the box and got booked for it. I think the ref must have pulled out the wrong card as he had the red one out down by his side. But when he looked down at it he put it away and got out his yellow card.
Right on the stroke of halftime Bovey took a deserved lead, a power driver from the edge of the box by Joe Bushin that almost broke through the back of the net.
The second half got underway and for the first five minutes T&D looked an improved side from their first half display, but sadly for them they were unable to maintain it.
Bovey won a corner that was met at the back post by Ryan Stanbridge who only managed to fire his effort over the bar. Up the other end a good move by T&D that might have reaped some rewards, but Gary Rivers took a shot far to early that was never going to trouble Adam Seedhouse in goal for Bovey.
Gaps started to appear in the T&D defence as they came under more pressure from so many good pacey runs by the Bovey front players. One great through ball up to Calam Livingstone on the edge of the box saw him turn and fire a wonderful shot into the back of the net.
Two nil then and was there any more goals to come? Yes it was soon three nil when Gav Collins fired in a cross from the right hand side to the back post where Joe Bushin was waiting to head the ball home.
Then it was four nil as Joe Bushin was played into the box and took a shot that was blocked by the keeper, but the loose ball fell kindly for Joe who from a tight angle rolled the ball over the line.
Another good through ball split the T&D defence found Calam Livingstone , the T&D keeper came rushing out right to the edge of his box and tried to get a foot on the ball. But Joe toed it past him and scored into the now empty net.
It was so nearly six nil When Jake Samsom had a great chance to score, but his headed effort only just went over the crossbar. There was a little handbag moment near the end that thankfully ended as soon as it started.
If you are a manager and your team win the first game of the season by five goals to nil you have to be happy, it could have been more to be honest. Bovey will face much firmer tests than they did today, but they are a side that looks like they have plenty of goals in them.
Totnes & Dartington will be disappointed with today’s result, they do need to tighten things up at the back and not be afraid to push men forward when they are on the attack. So many times in the first half, T&D were so short of numbers up front and as a result were never going to trouble the Bovey defence.
Many thanks to Steve C for making me so welcome today at the ground and also the Dean? From T&D for his help with their team sheet and Andy Mr Lemar for help with the Bovey team sheet.
