Final Score WBB 0 Kingsteignton Ath 3
It was the 25th May 2013; WBB took on the Kings in the final game of the season, a game that had so much riding on it for Brixham AFC. Buckland Athletic 2nd was top of the league table on 64 points with one further game to play, but due to reserves teams not being permitted to join the Peninsula League, they could not go up. If Brixham AFC could hold onto third place (they had completed their season) then they would go up, but WBB were just one pint behind and a win for them against the Kings would have dropped Brixham AFC to forth place in the league table.
I covered that game but was only able to use shirt numbers in my report, it was a fantastic exciting game to watch which WBB finally won by four goals to three.

A lot has happened in the last nine years since that match, Brixham AFC have firmly established themselves as one of the top teams in the Peninsula League, WBB who I am sure folded for a while now play their football in the South Devon Football League Premier Division. Kingsteignton Athletic plays in Division One, so the two clubs have not faced each other this season.
How Did Both Teams Get To The Quarter Final
WBB played Barton Athletic 1st away on the 13th November which they won by sixteen goals to nil. In the second round played on the 22nd January WBB were at home against Bishopsteignton United and won the game by ten goals to one. WBB were awarded an away walkover for their game that was due to be played on the 26th February as Harbertonford were unable to raise a side.
Kingsteignton Athletic received a bye in the first round and went straight into round two of this cup. On the 22nd January they faced Totnes & Dartington Reserves at home and won the game by four goals to two. They were at home again on the 26th February in the third round against Buckfastleigh Rangers and won the game by five goals to two.
What Can We Learn Form Both Teams League Form
WBB are in seventh place in the premier Division table on twenty three points from thirteen games. They have won a total of seven games, drawn two and lost four. They have scored a total of fifty seven goals, conceded twenty nine giving them a plus twenty eight goal difference. It should be noted that twenty five of their goals were scored against Barton Athletic 1st.
Kingsteignton Athletic currently sit in forth place in the Division One table on twenty nine points from twelve games. They have won nine, drawn two and lost just one game. They have scored a total of forty two goals, conceded sixteen giving them a plus twenty six goal difference.
I have covered a number of cup games this season where the two teams were from different divisions, in those games the lower league teams showed no respect to the higher league teams, played to all their strengths and won the match. I have covered one game featuring the Rams this season and was impressed with their work rate and goal threat. WBB will have to be at their very best if they are to overcome what will be a game the Rams feel they can win.
A place in the semi finals at stake, but bragging rights will also be very important to both clubs.
Match Report
Apart from the goal scorers I am only able to use numbers and not names for the Kingsteignton Athletic team in my report. I asked and the match referee also asked for correct numbers to be used on the team sheet, but it did not happen. I would like to thank the manager of WBB for a warm welcome and for playing his part as far as the team sheet is concerned.
My first visit to what is the new Abbrook Park, the last time I was there in 2013 the old pitch was still in use, but the new pitch had been completed ready for the next season. It is a very good looking pitch but could do with some netting being put up behind one of the goals. The only other problem with it is the fact that the dressing rooms are now some distance from the pitch itself.
The game itself did not live up to my expectations, a game that promised so much but delivered very little. WBB were unable to put out their strongest side and it showed in the first half. They were much better in the second half, but by then it was a bit too late.
The Rams on the other half started brightly and were enjoying most of the play and had the first shot on goal. Sam Barnes hit a good shot from just outside the WBB box that flew over the crossbar. They then took an early lead in the match. There was a clear foul in my opinion on a WBB player inside their box that was not given by match referee Keith Hawkins. The ball came back out of the box where a Rams player was brought down. Sam Barnes took the free kick, it was low and lacked any real power but the ball somehow found it’s way inside the left hand post.
The Rams nearly went two nil up when their number 13 got a shot away very close in on goal, but the ball ended up being blocked on the line and hooked away to safety.
WBB goal keeper Jamie Howarth took a goal kick but went down in great pain, he looked to have pulled a something and was unable to continue. Samuel Stowell took over the goal keeping duties.
WBB were in the Rams half and passing the ball well, after a good number of passes sub Ben Berrow was played into the Rams box, he got a good shot away that only just cleared the crossbar.
Rams number 3 had a good chance to add to his sides lead when the WBB keeper came racing out the left hand side of his box, number 3 saw the goal was unguarded and hit a shot but it went wide of the left hand post.
But it was soon two nil to the Rams, they won another free kick outside the WBB box. Once again it was taken by Sam Barnes and once again not the most convincing free kick. The ball bounced just in front of the keeper and up towards his arms. But he failed to hold onto the ball and it dropped kindly at the feet of Mark Volsey to fire home.
Rams Mark Volsey was racing towards the WBB box, Samuel Stowell came racing off his line close to the edge of the box and brought him down. The referee pointed to the spot and showed a yellow card to the keeper. The spot kick taken by number 8 was poor and straight at the keeper who was able to block the ball with his feet. The ball then went up in the air and when it came down he dived on it and got injured in the process. Thankfully he was able to continue.
The Rams almost instantly won a second penalty when Sam Peardon hacked down Sam Barnes when be burst into the WBB box. Sam Barnes took the kick himself and fired the ball low inside the left hand post.
Chances for WBB were few and far between but Gavin Weeks did it a power driver from the edge of the Rams box that Jay Osborn did well to beat away with both hands. Billy Clinch had a long ball played up to him, but he scooped his shot over the crossbar. Keith Hawkins blew up for the end of the first half.
The second half got underway and WBB looked a different side than the one that started the first half. They were enjoying much more of the ball and looked far more purposeful. But both sides were not creating anything in front of goal.
Rams Sam Barnes did have one good chance when he was found from a corner kick; he turned and took a shot just inside the WBB box. But sub goal keeper Samuel Stowell who had grown in confidence, made a good save on his left hand post turning the ball around the post for a second corner.
There was nothing else to write about for the remaining of the half, the WBB players kept working hard but got no rewards for their effort.
