Match Preview
Last years winners of the Ronald Cup Brixham Town 1st have reached the final again this year and against the same team they played in last seasons final. That game was played at the Duckpond Buckfastleigh on Thursday 17th June which Brixham Town won by three goals to one.
I covered The Brixham Town quarter final game of the Ronald Cup against Teign Village on the 2nd April 2022 at Furzeham Green. A game they found themselves losing at halftime by two goals to nil. At the end of normal time they had got back onto level terms to force extra time. But they had to wait until the second period of extra time to take the lead for the first time in the match before adding two further goals to win the game by five goals to two.

Brixham Town were due to play their semi-final game of the Ronald Cup away to Bishopsteignton last weekend but were awarded the tie as Bishopsteignton were unable to raise a side.
In the first round Totnes and Dartington sc 2nd faced Newton Abbot 66 reserves away on the 12th February and win the game by two goals to one. Their quarter final game was away to Chudleigh Athletic 3rd which they won by five goals to three.
They also faced extra time in their semi final game at home against Liverton United Reserves. But with the score after the extra time still at two goals all the tie was decided by a penalty shootout which they won by four goals to one.
Brixham Town played Totnes & Dartington 2nd in their opening game of this season at home on the 4th September with the game ending in a one all draw. They played them away on 29th January and won that game by two goals to one.
After losing the final last year Totnes & Dartington will be hoping to avenge that defeat and get their first win over the unbeaten Brixham Town this season.
Match Report
A very sizable crowd turned up to watch a very competitive and hard fought Ronald Cup final against two well matched teams. It really was a game of two halves, the first one played in warm early evening sunshine, and the second one in cold misty conditions.
It was hard to pick a winner in this match, but after a rather nervous start at the back, Brixham Town just edged the match. Even more so in the second half when their strength and determination saw them cross the winning line.
Match referee Ryan Zarezadeh blew his whistle and got the game underway The fishermen had a very early scare when Cam Atkinson in goal for them miss kicked the ball and nearly played in Bradley Spriggs. But he recovered well and put in a good sliding tackle and stopped what would have been a certain goal.
But just moments later another miss kick by a Town defender saw Jake Osmond able to get the ball over the goal line by the left hand post and give his side a very early lead.
Town went in search of an equaliser, Josh Piper got his head on a corner but headed wide, he also headed a cross into the Totnes box from the left hand side of the pitch just over the crossbar.
The game was end to end and from another corner Town got the goal they were looking for. Ben Ford found the ball at his feet and fired it into the back of the net. Just moments later Town took the lead, the ball was played into the Totnes box and found Stuart Pointon. He turned neatly in the box and hit a shot goal ward that took a defection on its way in.
It very much looked like Town would go in at halftime in the lead, but Samuel Ingham had other ideas. Right on the stoke of the end of the first half, he ran along the edge of the Town box and fired a low powerful shot acoss the keeper into the bottom left hand corner of the goal, it was the goal of the half.
Ryan Zarezadeh blew up for the end of the first half as the mist rolled in across the pitch, greatly reducing the opportunity to get decent second half action photos.
The second half got underway and it was more end to end action, Totnes Scott Troth hit a very wild effort that flew high and wide. Towns Josh Piper hit a powerful twenty yard effort that just went wide of the left hand post.
Towns keeper did very well to block a shot with his feet from Ben Towl, he also did well to save a shot low down by the post from the edge of the box by Jake Osman.
Town then nearly gave a goal away, a header back to the keeper was misplaced and went past Cam Atkinson, Josh Piper came to the rescue and did every so well to get to the ball before it crossed the goal line and got the ball around the post and behind for a corner.
All the players came to a standstill expecting the referee to blow his whistle, all except Towns sub number 16 who hit a shot from just outside the box that crashed onto the crossbar, had it gone in it would have been given.
Totnes came close to taking the lead again a number of times. Jordan Baxter was played into the left hand side of the Town box and hit a low shot across the keeper than only just went wide of the right hand post. Jake Osman was played into the right hand side of the box and shot just wide of the left hand post. Two good chances missed that proved costly in the end.
With just eight minutes left on the clock Town took the lead again. The ball came back out of the Totnes box to Stuart Pointon to fire home. Town did their best to wind the clock down, taking the ball into the corner at every opportunity. Shouts were going out everywhere for the match referee to blow up for the end of the match, but he found some extra minutes from somewhere and tested the nerves of the Brixham Town fans.
Brixham Town only know how to win, they are a great bunch of lads with a very likable manager. But Totnes & Dartington played their part in the match and might consider themselves a bit unlucky not to have won the match. As in any game of football its all about taking your chances and having luck on your side. Many thanks to both club managers for filling out the correct numbers on the team sheet. Many thanks to both sets of players, you provided a wonderful cup final.
