Our super trooper Lewis has been struggling of late due to his treatment. Last time he was give the same level of dosage that he was able to cope with. It was expected to be the same this time around, but it has been the case he is getting zapped with a very high dosage of chemo, followed by a smaller dose then a large one again the next time.
One thing we do know about Lewis is he is a fighter and determined to just get on with his life as best he can; it’s why we all love him as much as we do. Tomorrow evening (Thursday 30th May at 6pm) he will be playing cricket for Abbotskerswell in Paignton and I have been asked to come along and watch him play.
To be honest the match can’t come soon enough for me as it’s a chance to see Lewis again and spent some quality time with him. I will be taking my camera to get some action shots of this great wicket keeper and will try and write some sort of report on the game.

I have gone through my whole life believing I did not like the game of cricket. A game that seemed far to slow for my liking and was just like watching paint dry. I did play the game myself for a short while when I worked at Unigate as a milkman, but to be honest I was rubbish and those pads I had to wear almost came up to my waist.
I thought tonight was just going to be about having the opportunity to spent some time with Lewis and while I got to do that, I left the ground after the match, feeling I had had a most enjoyable time indeed.
Maybe the game being a 20 overs match played a part in making it very exciting and I’ll tell you what, the standard these under 12 lads play was far higher than I had expected. The last time these two teams played at Paignton, poor Abbotskerswell were well and truly hammered and the Paignton boys let them know about it after the game. Paignton got a 130 runs that day and Abbotskerswell only scored a lowly twenty seven.
The lads do get on with the game and keep it flowing along nicely and that also played a part in making the game very enjoyable to watch. When a batsman gets to thirty runs they have to retire as that is a league rule.
Paignton batted first and scored 123 runs and Lewis stumped one of their batsmen and did catch two balls behind the wicket that both Grahame and I though had taken a nick off the bat on the way into his hands. The click of bat against wood was clearly heard by both of us and Lewis shouted out, but the umpire gave nothing.
Lewis had done a fine job as the wicket keeper and played is part in keeping the runs down but as he was ninth in the batting order it looked unlikely he would get a chance to show me just how good he is with the bat.
The opening batsmen for Abbotskerswell did very well and by the time ten overs had passed, the team looked in a god position to win the match. But then they slumped a bit and a Paignton win looked on the cards. But with three overs left a few fours were hit and with nine balls left Abbotskerswell needed just two runs to win.
The very next ball was smashed for a four and that was it, Lewis and his team were celebrating and the Paignton lads looked shocked and dejected. A big well done Lewis and the lads, some real talent on show tonight and you all can only get better.

Great report Dave! You should work for the daily papers writing for them on the local sports section! Lewis enjoyed this game and as you know he really loves to play his part as the teams wicket keeper and always does a good job! He was, as always, keen to bat as well but has found his opportunities few and far between these days, partly due to the decent level of batting higher up the order.
He is keen to improve his game all round and with a bit of luck will get a chance to bat in a game or two. Bovey Tracey Under 12's at home on Monday 3rd and the under 13s also have a reverse fixture on Tuesday 4th. Not sure if Lew will be able to play both games as it might be a bit too much for him, but whatever happens he will do his very best for his team!

Not sure about that mate, but I do enjoy the challenge writing brings me as it is something I enjoy doing. I do find it a bit sad that Lewis has dropped down the batting order and I gave my thoughts on what is going on at the club to you.
Sadly the only thing that seems to matter in any sport played at any age these days is winning, while I happen to think its good the winning mentality is installed in young sports people, it can’t always be about just winning.
I do feel there should be a proper rotation system that ensures all the boys get some opportunities to bat as well as just field. Yes open with the top three batsmen but then rotate from there downwards, how can those further down the batting order ever improve, it they never get the chance to bat.

they have to improve in the nets at training to go up the batting order, to me it seems more of a lack of coaching technique. elbow up, head down, chin tucked in, leading foot down the inside line of the ball, straight bat and most importantly timing. if this is learned they will progress!

a ha ha ha, nearly wet myself! :-) you must have posted that after the kiwis smashed England all over the place! :-) on a more serious note I'd like to teach Lewis the correct basics before he learns to be petrified of spin like most English batsman! and before he learns any bad habits such as wearing 3 bloody lions on his shirt! :-)

I spoke to Grahame today and told him of your kind offer, he seemed very interested and I expect he will post on this thread really soon about it.
