Final Score Teignmouth AFC 3 Elmore AFC 0
Match Preview
What a wonderful season Teignmouth AFC enjoyed last season, not only ending up being crowned the champions of the Devon League South West Division but also reaching a number of cup finals.
I covered two games at Coombe Lane last season, the first one was on the 11th November 2021, a McDonalds League Cup 2nd Round against Topsham Town. Trailing two nil at halftime and down to ten men after Phil Kingman hacked down Kevin Pike in the box early in the half. But against all odds Teignmouth scored three second half goals to progress to the next round.

The second game I billed as the Title Decider, Teignmouth needed to win their final fixture of the season to overtake Mount Gould who was top of the table and just two points separated the clubs. The match took place on the 30th April 2022 against Plymstock United who were third in the table. Teignmouth gave Plymstock a footballing lesson after winning the game by eight goals to one.

It is so good to see Teignmouth back in the Peninsula league where they belong and they have made a good start to the season. A thrilling comeback on the opening day saw them 3-2 winners at Plymouth Marjon, last Saturday at home they beat Holsworthy by two goals to nil. But the wheels came off midweek when they were beaten away by Bovey Tracey by three goals to one,
Elmore AFC was formed in 1947 and has an up and down history as far as the leagues they have played in. in 1978 the club were playing in Division One of the Western League. They ended up joining the Premier Division of the South West Peninsula League in the 2012/ 2013 season.
They withdrew from the league midway through the 2014–15 season, after which the reserve team in the Devon & Exeter League became the first team. The club were Premier Division champions in 2017–18, earning promotion to Division One East of the South West Peninsula League. League restructuring saw them become members of the Premier Division East for the 2019–20 season.
They have not made the best start to the new season and lost their three opening games against Torridgeside Crediton and Brixham. But they picked up their first points after beating Bridport by two goals to one on Wednesday evening.
Teignmouth will see today’s game as a great opportunity to put the Bovey defeat behind them; Elmore on the other hand will be hoping to build on their recent win.
Match Report
I always feel there is something magical when ever I visit Coombe Lane, home of the mighty Teignmouth AFC. The only crazy thing about the ground is the fact it has no netting where it is required. It did once but was taken down and now the club require planning permission to put new netting up. I have never seen so many balls end up leaving the field of play, so many today the club ran out of match balls.
That aside you are always guaranteed one thing at Coombe Lane, an entertaining game of football that will have goals in it. Teignmouth did not even have to get out of second gear to win this match; sadly Elmore did not have too much to offer.
The match referee blew up for the start of the first half and neither team were able to get on top. Teignmouth had a very early shout for a penalty, but the referee was not interested.
The first half effort on goal came when Teignmouths Jack Baxter who was a bit to close to the left hand post, fired a low shot across the goal that went wide of the right hand post.
Teignmouth were looking for those long precise passes for their forwards to run onto, but they were not coming off as they hoped. For a short while Elmore seemed to be having a bit more of the ball, but there was no way passed a very strong Teign defence.
Elmore won the first corner of the match but it came to nothing, the ball was picked up outside the Teign box by Elmore’s Harvey Hogan, but he hit a wild effort that flew high over the crossbar. Up the other end Jack Baxter took another shot from a tight angle once again near the left hand post, but Adam Chamberlain in goal for Elmore, was able to get a hand on the ball.
Teignmouth then took a deserved lead they won a free kick that was taken by Scoot Moore. He floated the ball into the Elmore box and Myles Baxter glanced a backward header into the back of the net.
Teign’s Liam Jones hit a sweet shot from the edge of the Elmore box that was well held low down by Adam Chamberlain. There were a number of bookings in the game for Teignmouth; Liam was the first one to have his name taken for a late challenge.
Beadley Breslan soon joined him when he kicked the ball away after he had been flagged for offside. Teign’s Ryan Tresidder fancied his chances from 20 yards out, but had to stand and watch his effort go wide of the left hand post.
That was it for the first half with Teignmouth leading by the single goal. Elmore started the second half in a more determined mood, but struggled to create any meaningful chances.
Once again it was Teignmouth who looked more threatening in front of goal. Myles Baxter challenged the keeper for a high ball that the keeper was unable to hold, the loose ball fell to Ryan Tresidder who hooked his shot over the crossbar.
There was then another shout for a Teign penalty; they felt the foul was a good yard inside the left hand side of the box. But the match referee only awarded a free kick outside the box. It did not matter as the free kick was driven to the far post and headed back towards the centre of the goal for Scott Baxter to head home.
Two more Teign players picked up bookings when maybe all that was needed was a strong word, this was not a dirty game by any stretch of the imagination.
A third penalty shout echoed around Coombe Valley and this time it was given for a clear trip inside the box. Ashley Donahue put the ball on the spot and fired low into the right hand corner of the goal, sending the keeper the wrong way.
The win moved Teignmouth up to forth place in the table, they will play against much stronger teams as the season progresses, but what Teignmouth has going for them is a winning mentality.
A very enjoyable afternoon and I am sure I will back again later in the season.
