Match Preview
The FA Vase is an annual football competition for teams playing in Levels 9 and 10 (steps 5 & 6) a chance for clubs at this level to play at Wembley and pocket £30.000 if they were to win the final. There is a first and second qualifying round followed by first, second, third fourth and fifth proper rounds, then the quarter finals, semi-finals and the final itself. There are no replays in this competition and all ties must settled on the day, there is also a new title sponsor this season meaning the new name of this cup is the Isuzu FA Vase.
The prize money goes up for each round and the winner of today’s game will pocket £550.00 and the loser £160.00. There is a total of 586 clubs participating in this seasons FA Vase, all you have to do is win eight games and your team will be going to Wembley. Sounds easy on paper, but it is possible and one local team Buckland Athletic came so close last season.
Bovey Tracey plays in the Premier East Division of the South West Peninsula League and is currently in 11th place in the table on six points. Their record to date is played six, won two and lost four, scoring a total of seven goals and have conceded thirteen giving them a minus six goal difference.
Newquay plays in the Premier West Division of the South West Peninsula League and is currently in sixteenth place on one point, but they have only played three league games to date. One draw and two defeats so they will certainly be looking for their first win today. They have scored a total of two league goals, conceded five giving them a minus three goal difference.
I have always been a big fan of Devon Versus Cornwall games, so this was a very easy choice for me today. I remember a number of seasons ago, standing and staring at the Bovey pitch, the colour of the grass was amazing as was the whole condition of the pitch. But I expect today it will look like all the other pitches I have seen this season, brown and crying out for rain.
Match Report
What a wonderful welcoming family friendly football club Bovey Tracey is, the perfect place to spend a Saturday afternoon at. The ground has everything you need, a bar, lovely picnic area and a grassed area the kids can kick a ball around if they do not want to watch the match. Very impressed with how the pitch looked today, the first almost green one I have seen so far this season.
I do not think Newquay are a very poor side, they were beaten today by a very determined Bovey side which created all the best chances and took them when they came along. The Bovey defence stood strong and made the all important tackles and blocks when needed and their front men were on fire.
Match referee Andy Glanville blew up for the start of the match, I thought Newquay made a decent enough start and had the first chance of the match. A ball into the Bovey box from the left hand side was headed at goal by Conner Wharton, it lacked the power it needed to beat Dom Aplin in goal for Bovey who made a relatively easy catch.
Newquay thought they had taken the lead when a low side scissor kick close in hit the back of the net, but the referee blew his whistle and gave a free kick against Newquay for a handball. From wide out on the right hand side Newquays Alex Cole hit a powerful low shot across the keeper that only just went wide of the left hand post.
Newquay won a free kick on the halfway line, Tom Whipp took the kick and spotted the Bovey keeper was well of his line, he shot for goal which resulted in Dom Aplin trying to get back on his goal line but the ball just cleared the crossbar. Both sides were a bit guilty of giving the ball away cheaply at times after making a number of good passes.
It was Boveys turn to win a free kick in a good position out on the right hand side, the ball was fired into the Newquay box and headed on and dropped kindly for Callum Leech, but he hooked his effort over the crossbar.
On the thirty minute mark Bovey took the lead, a ball into the Newquay box was firmly headed home by danger man Ollie Aplin. They went close to adding to their lead when Callum Leech turned neatly in the box and got a shot away that only just cleared the crossbar.
Newquay came so close to getting back onto level terms, Dan Carne beat the offside trap and had to fend off two players to get a shot away that beat Dom Aplin but crashed against the crossbar.
That was it for the first half, Bovey were good for their one nil lead but Newquay might have gone back to the dressing rooms believing the game should be all square.
The second half was only six minutes old when Newquay gifted Bovey their second goal. I believe ( was writing a note downat the time), the keeper well of his line made a poor pass out of his box that was picked up by Mitch Thomas who coolly chipped the ball over the keeper into the back of the net.
Newquays Alex Cole was just inside the Bovey box and got a powerful low shot away that only just went wide of the right hand post.
Bovey were now well in control of the game and looked like they had more goals in them, a corner was swung into the Newquay box and Sam Chorley had to stoop low to get his head on the ball, but his effort was blocked on the goal line.
Newquay were still trying to get back into the game but could not find those all important passes when they mattered, plus the Bovey defence fought for every ball and broke all the Newquay moves down.
On the seventy six minute Ollie Aplin used his power and strength to brush aside two Newquay defenders to get onto a loose ball inside the box and picked his spot to put his side three nil up. James Destincourt had a good chance to add to his sides lead, but had to stand and watch his header go wide of the right hand post.
On another attack inside the Newquay box Brad Crocombe was hacked down and the referee pointed to the spot. Tom Burt took the kick and sent the keeper the wrong way. The most outrageous goal was saved for the end, Brad Crocombe was outside the box on the right hand side, he hit a shot from there that flew into the top left hand side of the goal. I think it even surprised him when it went in.
So that was it, a good five nil win that would have helped the teams confidence for their next league outing, on today’s evidence they can also face their next round opposition without and fear. Many thanks for the warm welcome and all the help with the team sheets, good luck in the next round.
Footnote, it was good to see the league secretary Phil Hiscox was OK after he was hit full on in his face by a ball that left the pitch doing 100 mph.
