Match preview
I may well have lived in Torbay for over forty years now, but Newton is my home town. It was where I was born, grew up in, played in as a young child and spent the first years on my married life.
There are so many places and features I remember in Newton as a child, that no longer exist in the Town. Even an area like Osborne Park has seen some big changes over the years. While all the terraced houses in Osborne Street, St Johns Street and Buckland view are all still standing along with the very old Tucker Maltings buildings, not everything still is since Newton 66 were formed in 1966.
For a start the building that housed the original changing rooms was knocked down and replaced by a block of flats, build to match in with the building across the road.
But the biggest changed happened at 7.30am one Sunday morning in 1975. A day the whole of the town came out to watch including me. Newton always had two landmarks, St Leonard’s Clock Tower and the Power station Cooling Tower, but after that Sunday only one remained. The power station was commissioned in 1924 and decommissioned in 1974 and the whole site was flattened and later housing was built on it. The image below was taken on the morning the tower was blown up; if you look carefully you can see the cracks at the base dug out to control the direction of fall.
History lesson over back to the football. I remember well when Newton 66 were founded, a new club for the town. For anyone interested the club set up a special facebook page to mark their 50th year, some great old team photos on there.

Newton 66 plays in the premier division of the SDFL and has not enjoyed a very good start in the 2022/2023 season so far. They currently are in ninth place in the league table on four points. They only managed a single point from their first seven games, a three all draw at home against East Allington played on the 8th October.
Since then they have lost to Ivybridge Town 2nd, Kingsteignton Athletic and Chudleigh Athletic. Not sure what happened last but they faced Ivybridge Town 2nd again, (they lost the away game by two goals to nil) this time at home and won the game by six goals to one.
A result that reduced their goal difference from minus sixteen to minus eleven and will most certainly have improved the teams confidence no end.
Beesands Rovers took over the top spot of the Division One table in the SDFL last weekend after a fine 4-2 home win against Morley Rangers 1st, pushing Torquay Town into second place. Town’s game against Paignton Villa 1st was called off last weekend, but Beesands did a have a game in hand over them.
Beesands record to date, played six, won four and drawn two, a total of fourteen points on the board and they have scored twenty seven goals, conceded thirteen giving them a plus fourteen goal difference.
Beesands are the inform team, but Newton 66 will feel they are in with a very good chance of making the next round after last weekends win.

Match Report.
When doing my research for my match previews, I look at recent results for both teams and have an idea how I think the game will play out. Well the game I watched today was not the game I was expecting, that is the beauty of this wonderful game.
I was slightly shocked by the score three quarters of the way through the first half; it very much looked like one team was going to win the match with a cricket score. But the second half turned into a real cup tie and became one of the most interesting games I have covered this season.
Match referee Dave Corderoy blew up for the start of the match and the Bees went straight on the attack from the off. But they very soon fell behind to a very early goal. Their own attack broke down and a very quick pass picked out Newton’s Tom Low. He used his pace and when he got a sight of the goal fired a good shot into the back of the net.
Bees Ashley Yeoman tried to get his side straight back onto level terms, but his effort of goal was well saved by Toby Creber in goal for 66.
The play switched straight back to the other end and Liam Ashwell was played in down the left hand side. He raced into the Bees box and fired a low unstoppable shot passed Rob Came to make it two goals to nil. The Bee players looked shell-shocked but there was worst to come for them.
They often looked light at the back and unable to deal with the pace and runs of the 66 forwards. 66 looked dangerous every time they got near to the bees box. They won two corners on the trot and the second one resulted in the ball coming back to the edge of their box. Oliven Hastie hit a great shot on goal from there that forced the Bees keeper into making a very good save.
The Bees mounted another attack of their own, but Adam Winkworth chose to take his shot from the edge of the 66 box and his effort was headed over the crossbar by a 66 defender.
Another good ball played up to Tom Lowe and once again he made sure he took his chance, hitting a good shot from the edge of the Bees box. While the Bees were playing some decent football at times, it was the clinical finishing off the 66 forwards that really separated the teams.
Three soon became four when danger man Tom Lowe was played in again down the left hand side. Once again he picked his spot and fired the ball home. I could not believe what I was seeing, this was not the Bees side I had seen before, but I was impressed with how 66 were playing and the goal threat they processed.
Four then became five and do I really need to tell you who scored it? Liam Ashwell played the ball to the back post where Tom Lowe was waiting to smash it over the goal line.
Game over I thought but then the Bees got their first goal in the match. A lose ball came back into the 66 box and Adam Winkworth found the ball at his feet with just the keeper to beat which he did. Jake Eades who looked a good player for the Bees got on the end of a ball over the top and got a second goal for his side. The ref blew up for the end of the first half, 66 were winning the game by five goals to two, but the big question was, was a comeback on the cards for the Bees?
The 66 players went back to the dressing room while the Bees players stayed out and the manager would have told his players they were very much still in this game.
But they very soon fell further behind, 66 won a corner that was fired into the Bees box and Thomas Mountfield stooped to get his head onto the ball and into the back of the net.
66 came close to scoring again, Tom Lowe was in the box with the ball at his feet, he did well to lift the ball over the keeper, but the ball went over the top of the crossbar.
But Tom did not have to wait too long to put his side seven goals to two up, a corner kick came to the edge of the Bees box and was knocked on toward the goal. Tom was close to the goal line and got the final touch on the ball.
The Bees were still trying to play their own game and were not prepared to give up. They came close to getting a goal back from a corner, captain Lewis Foot got a good head on the ball, but his effort went wide of the post.
Ashley Yeoman hit a good shot just inside the Bees box that was saved. Brad Williams blasted the ball high over the 66 crossbar from the edge of the box. Adam Winkworth had a golden opportunity when he was played in with just the keeper to beat, but Toby Creber was able to block the shot with his body.
The Bees were then given a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty; Ashley Yeoman put the ball on the spot and sent the keeper the wrong way. Seven three and it soon became seven four when Kieran Stallard headed the ball home from a corner kick.
The Bees then went and scored again, in my opinion the best goal of the match. Jack Eades made is way in from the right hand side of the pitch and it a twenty yard screamer into the roof of the net.
Was there still enough time for two more goals for the Bees? Well there was one of those handbag moments which resulted in a player being book from each side. The Bees had a player down that required a good amount of time to treat him and the end of the game just seemed to drift away.
Dave blew up for the end of the match; I fail to understand why 66 have not won more league games this season. They are a side that clearly has goals in it. But I am sure they will be climbing up the table soon.
Not the result the Bees were looking for, but the players can all hold their heads high; they only lost by two goals in the end.
Many thanks to both team managers etc for filling out the team sheet with the correct numbers. I really enjoyed covering my first game at Osborne Park and thank you all for the warm welcome.
