Final Score Plainmoor Ladies 1 Paignton Villa Woman 1
Dave’s Thoughts
It is good to be there at the beginning on a new football team’s journey. I covered Paignton Villa Woman’s first ever game, a friendly against Bradninch Woman FC 29th May 2022. This is their first season playing in the league and since that very first game they have slowly been making progress.
The Plainmoor ladies travelled to Whiterock on the 23rd October and won the game by five goals to one. The weather was horrendous that day; I even questioned myself why I was out taking photos in such heavy rain.
While they had picked up a single league point, Paignton Villa were looking for that very first win. They came so close at home against Signal Box Oak Villa on the 5th February. Much the better team on the day and I still do not know how they ended up losing the game by three goals to two.
Sat at home at lunch time, the sun was out and I decided to pop over to the Windmill Hill ground hoping I might witness that very first win. Only I forgot how that park got its name as I slowly chilled in the wind. Villa made a good start in the game and scored the first goal of the match. They were awarded a penalty kick that was taken by their number 17. She had scored two good goals against Oak Villa and I was sure she was going to convert the spot kick. But she fired the ball straight at the keeper who ended up spilling the ball and thankfully for Villa their number 6 was there to fire the loose ball home.
Could they hold onto the lead and build on it? Sadly not and it was no surprise who scored for the Plainmoor ladies. Their number 10 had impressed me in their away fixture with the Villa ladies and she did not disappoint today.
The Villa keeper came rushing out to the right hand side of her box and a shot was fired over her. It was clear the ball was going wide of the far post and I was convinced the ball would go out for a goal kick. But number 10 went after it, kept it in and from a tight angle fired the ball across the goal into the far corner of the net.
At halftime the score remained at one all and Villa for a good half an hour could not match their first half performance. There was a long break in the game when a Plainmoor Lady went down in a lot of pain. I hope she is OK.
The Villa defence played their part to prevent Plainmoor taking the lead and later in the half Villa had at least three good chances to claim all three points. Three of those fell to number 17 and I was very surprised she was not able to take one of them.
The Plainmoor ladies thought they had won the match when their super striker number 10 hit a good shot from inside the Villa box. But the ball hit the inside of the left hand post and headed towards the right post. The Villa keeper was able to catch up with it and grab it in her arms.
I point can often seem like a win sometimes and a one all draw against a team that beat you by five goals to one in the last meeting has to be seen as progress in action from the Villa Woman.
