Why Young Lives vs Cancer ?
Bens Story
On May 2023, the lives of the Hiscoke family were turned upside down when young TUFC fan Ben was diagnosed with a high-grade brain tumour.
Ben was swiftly moved to Bristol Children’s Hospital, where emergency operations were carried out to remove most of the tumour, however the crushing news then came in that Ben had been diagnosed with brain cancer.
Young Lives Vs Cancer provided the family with incredible support, from the big stuff like sorting out somewhere to live whilst away from home, to helping with forms and navigating a whole new world.
Ben’s Dad – also a huge United fan- has spoken about the invaluable help his family was provided with at such a difficult time.
“They gave us somewhere to live when we needed it the most, and sorted out all the administration that goes with that. You hear of horror stories where people are paying out thousands of pounds in hotels to stay close to the hospital” said Jon, who went on to explain why he, with the help of Madri Boys’ co-founder Liam Lindon, chose to raise money to help others who find themselves in a similar situation.
“It is an honour to be able to raise money for this incredible cause. Ben is an incredibly determined young man who lives his life to the full. Every setback is met with an attitude of overcoming it. Join us supporting a good cause, any money raised will make a huge difference to the lives of children.

Final Score Madri Boys 3 Torquay United Allstars 3
For a good part of my life I was a diehard Torquay United fan, never missing a home match and going to as many away matches that I could. I watched them at Wembley, Whitehart Lane, Hillsbrough, Coventry, Ashton Gate and so many other great grounds.
Many of the Allstar players in today’s game were my heroes, so its no wonder when asked to cover this game I was so happy to do so. It was great to see them all looking so well and while as one gets older we lose that pace, these all star players showed that class and skill can stay with us for so much longer.
As much as I was happy to see these players today, my highlight was talking to Scott Corderoy and his beautiful wife. Scotty is my hero and my inspiration on those low days we all get from time to time. I hope one day he will be able to pull on those gloves again and play the game he loves.
The Allstars were a class act today, Chris Hargreaves controlling the midfield and his passing and vision was second to none. Matt Hockley as tigerish as ever and Chris Todd showing why he was always a fans favourite at Plainmoor. I bet the current TUFC manager wished he had players of this class in his side yesterday.
Very pleased to see so many people turn out to support this event and Liam Lindon deserves so much praise for all the hard work he has put in to make this event possible.
I was very impressed with the Madri Boys today, a good quality side and their build up play was first class, but on many occasions just missing that final quality pass. Three one down I was so pleased to see the game end in a three all draw, what an outrageous third goal they scored.
The match referee got the game underway and the Allstars were knocking the ball around well. They won the first free kick of the game but nothing came from it. The Madri Boys got the first shot on goal from the edge of the box that went just wide of the right hand post.
The Allstars won the corner corner of the game that was fired high into the box and well claimed by Robbie Terry who was in goal for the Madri Boys. Robbie had an outstanding game pulling off so many top class saves.
A neat passing move by the Allstars saw the ball finally played to Chris McPhee who was on the edge of the Madri box, but his shot sailed high over the crossbar.
Madri’s Gary Rivers fancied his chances from twenty yards out, but his effort also flew over the crossbar. The Allstar players were all looking fit and playing the ball around so well, at times it looked like they had an extra man with all the space they were creating.
More good build up play by the Madri Boys but the final pass down the right was well over hit and the good move came to an end. The Allstars Steve Tully burst into the right hand side of the Madri box and got a great shot away that was brilliantly saved by a diving full length save by Robbie Terry, the follow up shot was blasted over by and Allstars player.
The Allstars then took the lead after the Madri Boys lost the ball just outside of their own box. The ball was quickly sent to Lee Phillips just out side the left hand side of the box, he stuck the ball wonderfully well in the far right hand corner of the goal.
Chris Hargreaves was pulling all the stings in the midfield and playing good balls out wide and also down the middle. A good ball in towards the Madri box from the right hand side was met by Kevin Hill but he effort went wide of the right hand post.
The sun was out and it was getting hot out on the pitch for the players so the ref stopped the game for a much needed water break. The game got back underway and Steve Tully made a good run from midfield and got inside the Madri box, but his shot ended up and easy catch for the keeper.
The Madri Boys were guilty again of giving the ball away on the edge of their box, Chris McPhee got a shot away that was well pushed away by Robbie Terry and behind for a corner. The corner kick was fired in and headed behind for a second corner.
The Madri Boys then had a good chance to get back onto level terms when Tom Gordi Cormyn found himself close in by the left hand post, but his effort ended up going across the goal when I was expecting the ball to hit the back of the net. Mark Titchard who was forty yards from goal and had players in front to pass to, went for a shot that was well wide and what might have been a good attacking move was over.
That was it for the first half, both sets of players stayed out on the pitch and I think only a ten minute break was taken. Straight away Robbie Terry was called into action with another top class diving save to prevent the Allstars adding to their lead.
The Mardi Boys once again were looking good in their build up play but that final pass was still missing. But Tom Armstrong did go on a very strong run and beat all in front of him and got a shot away that crashed onto the crossbar and came back into play, Martin Rice might have got a hand on the ball, but I can not tell from my pictures.
The Allstars then increased their lead when a nice pass picked out Chris Hargreaves who was on the edge of the Madri box. Chris looked up and coolly picked his spot and almost passed the ball inside the right hand post. He took off his shirt to celebrate safe in the knowledge he was not going to be booked for doing so.
Mark Forrester got inside the Madri box from the left hand side and fired his shot just over the crossbar. A second water break was called for as it was getting even hotter out on the pitch. The pace of the game had now dropped dramatically mainly due to the heat and the age of the players.
The vision and passing of the Allstars was still one class above the Madri boys and a joy to watch. Chris Todd was still full of running mind you and got inside the right hand side of the box and got a good low shot away that only just went wide of the far left hand post.
The Madri boys then got a goal back that was so well deserved. The ball was played to Gary Rivers who was out on the right hand side and advanced towards the goal. Martin Rice came out to narrow the angle but Gary was able to fire the ball past him into the back of the net.
The Allstars still looked a threat and a great ball down the right hand side saw Matt Hockley go on a long run but his final shot was saved by Robbie Terry. The Allstars then got their third goal of the match after a great ball played in Lee Philips. He took the ball around the keeper and planted the ball into the back of the net.
We were then treated to a very special goal when Adam Shearer went on a very long run beating all in front of him and once inside the Allstars box fired a powerful shot from inside the left hand side of the box that flew inside the right hand post.
The Madri Boys went looking for the equaliser and won a corner that in the end came to nothing. Then Matt Hockley was played clean into the Madri box with just the keeper to beat, but once again Robbie terry made a fine blocking save.
Then when there looked no danger on the Allstars goal, from what must have been forty yards out, Alan Harnlet fired the ball high in the air in the direction of the Allstars goal. The ball went over the top of Martin Rice and dipped in under the crossbar. I am sure he will tell us he was going straight for goal.
That was it a very enjoyable game to watch and cover and I am sure plenty of money was raised on the day. Well done to all concerned and I am so glad I agreed to cover this event.
