Match Preview
Tuesday night’s cup match between Brixham AFC & Okehampton Argyle was match thread number 500 in the Davesworld Sports reports Room. As a result I found myself on Wednesday looking back at many of the much older match reports in the sports room.
While it was nice to take a trip down memory lane, it did remind me of clubs now lost and possibly gone forever. Some of these clubs were formed over a hundred years ago, clubs some of today’s younger players have never heard of, let alone played against them.
I have always felt that somehow village clubs were special and I am pleased so many are still in existence. When they were formed most of the players would have been from the village, but that is not the case these days.
While Kingskerswell & Chelson ( the two clubs merged in 2006) only folded a season or so ago, it does show the value of clubs still continuing running youth football.
In the words of Kingskerswell FC
So the club has reformed this year with manager Paul Mills at the helm. Paul was running an under 16’s side last year and wanting to bring them through into men’s football. He’s assisted by former kerswell players Mitch Lovell and Elliot crook. Whilst also club stalwart Paul Edward’s still going strong as club chairman.
The aim was to help Paul Integrate the young lads with a mixture of experience so this is where former players from kerswell of the past answered his call and happily got the boots back on. With a new name of Kingskerswell FC and fresh squad the season is looking very promising. Already 2 games in and 19 goals scored.
Kingskerswell & Chelston September 2021 Playing in Division One
The picture above was from their game against Abbotskerswell who folded just a few weeks after this game. But even back and then and in a later game I covered against Paignton Villa in February 2022, it was clear the club was struggling for players.
Getting youngsters into football early is a way to help ensure adults teams will stay around and not need to fold in the future due to a lack of players. Who knows we might one day see a new adult Galmpton or even Riviera United team back playing in the South Devon Football League.
I had hoped to cover a Broadhempston home game last season, but for a number of reasons it did not happen. I believe I have only ever covered one of their games before, a 4th Division away fixture against Paignton Villa 3rd on the 4th February 2023. a game they won by three goals to two.
Broadhempston in February 2023
So How Are The Cubs Doing So Far This Season?
While the Kings are in third place on six points in the league table, they have only played two games so far winning them both convincingly. In their opening game they thrashed Kingsbridge & Kellaton United 1st away by eleven goals to nil. Last weekend they beat new club Templer Way FC 1st also away by eight goals to three.
Broadhempston are currently in second place in the league table on nine points from the four games they have played so far. They made a good start to the new season beating Waldon Athletic 3rd at home by two goals to nil. At home again next they beat Paignton Villa 3rd by one goal to nil. Up next at home they beat Barton Athletic 2nd by four goals to one. But the wheels came off in their game last weekend once again a home fixture. Teign Village who had been beaten earlier in the season by Templer Way FC 1st won the game by five goals to one.
A first home fixture for the new Kingskerswell side and a first away fixture for the Robins. The Kings will be looking to build on their fine start this season and it is a team that clearly has goals in it. The Robins will be looking to put last weekends result behind them and get back to winning ways. This should be a cracking match and may the best team win.

Match Report
When I looked at this fixture on Monday and decided to cover it, I was expecting it to be a close game. While they were beaten at home last weekend by Teign Village by five goals to one, they had won their opening three games of the season.
In all fairness I did not know just how good this Kingskerswell side was, a good mixture of young talent and some older experience heads and a team capable of playing a good passing game. On today’s evidence I believe they have a very good chance of being crowned the Division Four Champions this season.
Credit must be given to all the Robins players, they worked hard and never gave up, but today they came up against a class side that seem to be able to score goals for fun.
The match referee got the game underway and the robins started with intent but soon found themselves one goal behind. A good low ball was played into the Robins box from the right hand side where Liam Ford was waiting to fire the ball home in off the post.
Joshua Clarke, who was constant thread on the Robins goal all afternoon, took a shot from just outside of the Robins box that Joe Ellis in goal for the Robins did well to tip over his crossbar for a corner.
The Robins were soon to find they were two goals behind when a simple through ball played Alex Harding into the Robins box with only the keeper to beat. He picked his spot and sent the ball crashing into the back of the net. There was then a big shout for a Kings penalty when Joshua Clarke was clearly pushed over inside the Robins box, but the referee waved play on.
The Robins then won their first corner of the match that was fired high into the Kings box, but the match referee saw a push by a Robins player and awarded the Kings a free kick.
The Kings Baily Clarke was also a constant threat to the Robins defence down the left hand side, he burst into the left hand side of the Robins box and got a shot away close in that hit a defender and went behind for a corner.
The Kings Owen Stockton hit a twenty yard shot on goal from the right hand side that hit the far left hand post and came back into play. Baily Clarke sent a good high ball in from the left hand side, the Robins Alex Norman headed the ball back to his keeper with incredible pace on it that the keeper did well to catch and hold onto.
The Robins Oliver Tuff was a willing runner up front for them, but so often his team mates failed to pick him out. But he did get a good left foot shot away from the edge of the box that only just went wide of the left hand post.
Joshua Clarke had the ball at his feet again after receiving a good through ball. the keeper came out but Josh fired the ball around him into the now empty net. From a Kings corner Owen Stockton got a good header on the ball that looked to be going inside the right hand post, but a Robins defender just managed to block the ball with his body.
The Robins were under immense pressure and guilty of conceding a number of corners far too easily. Joshua Clarke was played in again and tried to chip the keeper who somehow managed to get something on it and prevent his side going even further behind. The ball went back to Josh and this time the keeper was able to make a save low down by his post and get the ball behind for yet another Kings corner.
The Robins keeper was under constant pressure, first having to punch the ball away and then making another good save low down. The Kings won another corner and this time Owen Stockman was able to get something on the ball and fire it home. But the referee blew up for a foul on the keeper. I have a 20 shot burst that shows it might have been the other way around as the keeper had his arms wrapped around a Kings player and clearly pulled him over.
There was another big shout for a kings penalty when Alex Harding hit a shot from the edge of the box, it seemed to strike the hand of a Robins player before the keeper made another fine save low down by the right hand post, but nothing was given.
Baily Clarke was in the box on the left hand side again and close in got a shot away the keeper just blocked with his outstretched boot. Alex Harding got another good shot away from just inside the Robins box that was well caught by Joe Ellis. The Kings so easily could have been winning by a much higher score and the Robins have their keeper to thank for making so many good saves.
Joshua Clarke clearly had a bit too much to say that the referee did not like, showed him a yellow card and sent him to the sin bin.
Two more shots were fired at the Robins goal, Owen Stockton went on a good run down the middle and got a shot away that was saved well low down and then from out side of the box Liam Ford hit a good shot just wide of the left hand post.
That was it for the first half, the Kings were winning by three goals to nil and I thought there were more goals to come in the second half. Both sets of players decided to stay out on the pitch during the break.
The second half got underway and the Kings soon added to their first half lead. They won a free kick out on the right hand side that was fired high towards the back post. Shane Shobbrook rose well and headed the ball home.
The Robins Dan Wells did have a rare chance to score a goal for his side but he dragged his shot well wide of the post. The game was then stopped due to a Robins player head injury but thankfully he was able to continue.
It was soon five nil when Oliver Clarke took a shot inside the Robins box that hit the back of the net. The Kings made a sub and brought on Jevvy Reilly, but moments later had a handbag moment with the Robins (19?) and both players received a yellow card.
The Kings Daniel Waye and Robins Oliver Tuff also had a coming together shortly afterwards and were both booked as well. Kings Baily Clarke sent another good high ball into the Robins box from the left hand side. Josh Clarke got his head on the ball that was just a bit fractionally too high and headed over the crossbar.
But Josh was soon to score again and when a good ball was played down the right hand side to Alex Harding. He hit a low ball into the Robins box that was fired home by Josh. Josh came close again when a long ball picked him out, he tried to lobb the keeper but the ball hit the crossbar and went behind for a goal kick.
From a Kings corner Jevvy Reilly got a shot away that was once again well saved by Joe Ellis. Another penalty shout when Charlie Clarke was played into the Robins box, there was some confusion as to what the referee had given, but he then gave a free kick for a foul on the keeper.
Then Joshua Clarke went down far too easily in my opinion in the Robins box the ref pointed to the stop. Liam Ford took the spot kick, the keeper went the right way but the penalty kick was perfect and went in low by the right hand post.
It was now seven goals to nil and it was only a question of how many more goals the Kings would score. There seems to be some confusion about the final score, the Kings think they won by ten goals to nil, fulltime has it at twelve goals to nil. I had it down as eleven, but I gave second goal to Oliver Clarke hit a first time shot when the ball came into the box from the right hand side and hit the underside of the bar. I may be wrong but I thought a goal was given.
It was soon nine goals to nil or eight when a Robins defender missed kicking the ball completely, Joshua Clarke ran onto the loose ball and has the keeper came out fired it past him into the back of the net.
Robins did win another free kick just outside the Kings box, but Dan Wells sent the ball over the crossbar. I(t was soon ten or nine nil when way outside the left hand side of the Robins box Joshua Clarke fired a powerful low shot across the keeper that went inside the far right hand post.
From the restart with only seconds left Alex Harding hit a long range from the halfway line that sailed over the keeper. So if I got it right the final score was eleven goals to nil but ten if Oliver Clarke did not score a second goal.
Many thanks to both team managers for all their help with the team sheet today, it was very much appreciated.
