Final Score Teign Village 5 Templer Way 2
Match Preview
If you look at both clubs logos you will see they were both formed in the 20th year in a century, but a closer look will show one club is 100 years older than the other. The building of Teign village commenced around 1910 by The Teign Valley Granite Company to entice workers to come and live there. There were a lot of families from Wales called 'Jones' when the houses were first built,
Teign Valley Football Club was founded in 1920 by local men, many of which worked in the local quarry, giving them the nickname “The Quarrymen”. Sadly like so many of our much older clubs in the SDFL, there is no recorded history to be found. It is a real shame as so much would have happened to those clubs over the years and there is no one still alive to tell us about those really early years.
I have always known Teign Village as a SDFL club that was until the start of the 2022/2023 when they decided to join the Devon & Exeter league, they only played in that league for one season before returning to the SDFL for the start of the 2023/2024 season in Division Three.
Teign Village Had This To Say
The club was folding in June 2023 until Manager Josh Robinson and assistant manager Jake Robins took over and rebuilt the squad. The first half of the season didn’t go to plan, but back end of the season we nearly managed to do the great escape with some great results, but unfortunately it was not meant to be and we got relegated into Div 4. With some big transfers of good players and retaining the whole squad from last year - we are looking to compete this season and push for promotion. We unfortunately went out in the first round of the county cups on pens though.
We all know the difficulty so many clubs face to even exist these days and hopefully Teign Village are now a much more secure club and have put passed problems behind them.
Who Are Templer Way FC ( in their own words)
We are a team formed in 2020 with the aim of helping boys with wanting to get out once COVID restrictions were lifted to help with mental health issues and other issues from COVID. We spent 3 years in the Exeter & District Sunday League and made the move to Saturday League to get a more structured league season and to test ourselves with a new challenge.
How Are Both Clubs Doing So Far This Season?
Teign Village start this game in third place in the league table on nine points. They have played a total of four games winning three and losing one. They have scored a total of nineteen goals, conceded six giving them a plus thirteen goal difference.
Templer way is currently in fifth place in the league table on six points from three games, winning two of them and losing one. They have scored a total of thirteen goals, conceded fifteen putting them on a minus two goal difference.
Last weekend Teign Village at home beat Waldon 3rd by nine goals to one, they have also beaten Broadhempston United 1st away by five goals to one and Chudleigh Athletic 2nd at home by two goals to nil.
Their only defeat this season was away to Templer Way when they were beaten by four goals to three, the Teign Village report on that game can be read here. www.facebook.com/teignvillagefc/
Templer Way last game was on the 21st September at home when they were beaten by Kingskerswell FC ( a team I have tipped to win the league this season)by eight goals to three. They did win their other two games away to Newton Rovers 2nd by six goals to four and their home win against Teign Village.
Teign Village will be looking to make sure this time they do not end up as the losing side again, while Templer Way will be hoping to do the double over Teign Village. It promises to be a cracking game, may the best team win.

Match Report
The forecast in the week for today was rain, but instead we were treated to a dry afternoon in sunshine. It became a bit windy and a little bit chilly and Teign Village used the wind to full effect in the first half of the match.
There is a reason I am happy to cover games in the lower divisions, a game like today is a great advert for grassroots football. Both sets of players gave their all, some excellent goals scored and players in both sides that caught the eye that clearly could play in a higher division.
During the first half it was hard to see who might win the game, but Teign Village seemed to want it just that bit more and were nearly always first to the ball. They also have their keeper to thank as he made a good number of important blocking saves when Templer players were in on goal.
Before we get to the report I firstly want to thank both clubs and their players all the very best of warm welcomes today, being made to feel a part of the day means so much. Secondly I want to say a big well done to the match referee Rob Ashford, this was only his forth game in the middle and I thought he did very well.
The referee got the game underway and the Quarrymen made a good start and a ball over the top played Alex Casson into the Templer box. But his shot was not up to his standards and went wide of the right hand post.
Teign Village then took a very early lead in the match when a ball out on the right was played to James Bennellick who was twenty yards from goal. He hit a great shot that flew into the top right hand corner of the goal.
Teign’s Ryan Cossey then fancied his chances from the same distant, but his effort flew high over the crossbar. One their very first meaningful attack Templer got back onto level terms. Chris Bennett did ever so well out on the right hand side of the Teign box. He was strong on the ball and sent a great ball towards the back post where Matt Beck was waiting to fire it home.
The Quarrymen won the first corner of the game but the ball in was poor and went behind and out of play before it even reached the goal. Tom Beer was then a bit over keen going in on the Templer keeper, who did well not to react.
The wind started to pick up and the game was now much more even, but it was Jamie Bennellick for the Quarrymen who had the next chance to put his side back in front. He was played into the box and forced a fine one handed save from Lees Smith who was in goal for Templer.
Templer then took the lead after some more great battling play out on the right hand side by Chris Bennett. He fired the ball into the box and Alfie Mofitt fired a shot passed the keeper into the back of the net.
They always say you are most vulnerable just after you score a goal in a match and that proved to be the case for Templer. Straight from the kick-off Ryan Cossey was played into the Templer box with just the keeper to beat and he made the finish look easy.
At this stage two goals all was a fair enough score and the next goal was going to be an important one. Teign’s Alex Casson hit a good shot from the edge of the box that just went over the crossbar. They then won a free kick out on the right hand side that was fired high to the back post. Ryan Tucker-Swift rose well and headed the ball down but it bounced right into the arms of the keeper.
The Quarrymen then look the lead when what looked like a nothing ball was played across from the left and went to James Bebbellick who was eighteen yards from goal, he hit a first time shot that left the keeper rooted to the spot as it hit the back of the net.
A long Teign ball forward was headed by Templer’s George Minty that almost knocked him out, the game was stopped while he received treatment. Things got worse for Templer when they went even further behind from a Teign corner. Lee Smith attempted to punch the ball clear by the right hand post, but the ball hit his own player Lee Wilby and went in.
Tom Beer showed his strength on the ball and entered the right hand side of the Templer box and got a shot away that went the wrong side of the post and behind for a goal kick. Ryan Cossey tried to use the wind when he hit a long range shot at the Templer goal, but the ball was well caught by the keeper.
It was now feeling a bit colder as the match referee blew up for halftime with the score four goals to two in favour of the Quarrymen. They headed back to the dressing rooms and the Templer boys stayed out on the pitch.
The second half got underway and Templer very soon found themselves even further behind, when the Quarrymen score again. Tom Beer then thought he had put his team even further in front when he fired the ball home, but it was ruled out for a foul on the player he robbed the ball from.
Tom then had a little incident with Kyle King and the referee sensibly decided to have a strong word with both players rather than show them a card.
The Quarrymens keeper Jack Beer then played such a big part in protecting his sides lead. A Templer long ball glanced off the head of a Teign defender and into the path of Danny Rogers into the right hand side of the box, Jack came out and made a fine blocking save with the ball going behind for a corner.
Chris Bennett was played in and out rushed Jack Beer again to make another blocking save. Chris was played in again and yet another blocking save from Jack Beer, the ball did fall back to Chris Bennett but he could not find the back of the net.
Tom Beer was brought down on the edge of the Templer box by Nick Osbourn who was shown the yellow card. The free kick was taken by James Bennellick who got the ball passed the wall but just wide of the right hand post.
Ryan Cossey played a neat one two with Alex Casson and got a shot away from the edge of the box that just went wide of the post.
Up the other end and yes you got it right, Chris Bennett was played into the Teign box again and like a rocket Jack Beer was out to make yet another blocking save with his body.
The Quarrymens James Bennellick was played in but put his shot wide of the right hand post. From thirty five yards out Templers Chris Bennett hit a powerful shot with the wind behind it that only just went wide of the left hand post.
The game was stopped for another head injury, thei time Ryan Tucker-Swift, he was OK to carry on unlike the last time I covered one of his home games when he came off blood over his face.
Templer were battling hard but the game was lost for them and with hardly any time left to play there was no way back for them. The match referee blew up for the end of the match. On the balance of play the Quarrymen deserved their victory, but for all their hard work and effort Templer may feel the final score was a bit harsh on them.
A Templer player had this to say after the game “ I think it was a great performance from Teign Village, they had the wind in the first half and played smart we played stupid and the better team won on the day”.
