Hookhills V Buckland Athletic 3rd’s 4th May 2013
WBW Solicitors South Devon Football League Division two
Venue Whiterock #2 Match Officials: Nick Oxley
With Buckland playing away from home and no first team games on at both Stoke Gabriel or Galmpton, I decided to just pop up the road to Whiterock and watch the game between Hookhills V Buckland Athletic 3rd’s. For this match report I will just have to use the player’s numbers as I was unable to find a way to get the names of the players taking part in the game other, other than trying to ask each and everyone of them.
After having watched Bucks first team a number of times this season, I was not too sure what to expect from their 3rd’s. I half expected them to be better gifted, fitter and even before the kick-off I liked the look of their number 17 who just had a quality look about him. But then I have also seen Hookhills play this season and the last time I did I was impressed with their excellent passing game and they looked a side that had plenty of goals in them.
Buckland simply did not get started from the off and struggled to even get into the Hookhills half, when they did get the ball over the halfway line, they could not break though the very strong Hookhills defence. It was no real surprise to see Hookhills take a very early lead, not sure where the Bucks defence was, but the ball was a simple one into the box for Hookhills number seven to fire home.
Just five minutes later it was two nil to Hookhills, this time the goal came after an excellent five passing move down the right hand side of the pitch, The final ball was delivered on a plate to Hooks number ten who fired home from the edge of the box. At this point of the game it looked like Bucks were in for a hammering and the score could have been a lot worse for them if the Hookhill players and put away a good number of other chances they created.
In the last twenty minutes of the first half, Bucks started to get more into the game as the chances started to dry up at the other end, it was no real surprise to see a good bit of quality from Bucks number seventeen, who jinked into the box and with some very good footwork, created a shooting opportunity that he took well. So the first half ended with the score two one to Hookhills and were we going to see an improved second half from the Bucks players?
That turned out to be the case and for a good while during the second half Bucks were clearly on top. But try as hard as they did, they could not find that second goal that would have brought the scores back to level. I did think they deserved that second goal, but if you do not take your chances when they come and are pressing high up the pitch, there is always the real danger of conceding another goal. Bucks number two did come very close with a clever overhead flick from just outside the area, the keeper was beaten but the ball just dropped down onto the top of the crossbar and over for a goal kick.
The game then swung very much in Hookhills favour, they took a long throw in close to the corner, as the heads went up the ball dropped behind the Bucks defence and Hookhills number seven was the first to react and fired the lose ball past the keeper. Hookhills soon made it four goals to one after their number nine hit a good shot that the keeper did well to get down and block. But with the keeper still on the floor the ball came to number six who fired the ball into the empty net. Bucks by this time had all but given up and it was all one way traffic again. Hookhills final goal came right at the end of the game, they won the ball in midfield and three passes later their number eleven hit a fine low shot from just outside the area that flew into the corner on the net.
All in all a very good game of football and I have said it before, but the standard of football played in the SDL, is on the up and up.
