Stoke Gabriel Churchward Memorial Ground One of the local grounds I can often be found at on match days is the Churchward Memorial Ground, the home of Stoke Gabriel FC. This ground must be one the best village grounds in the whole of Devon that now has a wonderful new clubhouse.
The club was formed in the early 1900’s, but back then had to rely on the generosity of local farmers to provide a ground while having to utilize a school classroom and old army hut to use as changing rooms.
The club in 1981 purchased land in Broadway Lane and turned a slopping field into the pitch they use today. They named the ground The. Churchward Memorial Ground honour of the Great Western Chief Railway Engineer who was born in the village. The new ground was officially opened in 1984.
In 2009 the club was given permission to build a new club house, but due to certain issues, it was not completed until 2012 and ended up not having the seats that were in the original plans. The Old Clubhouse How the new clubhouse was meant to be Built
