Seaton & Colyton

One of the real great things about living on the southwest coast is, you can go south or north along the coast and find many great places to have a really nice day out. and when Carol and I go out we do make sure we make a real day of it and do as much as we can during the day.

I will point out that the pictures were taken in September 2004, one complete year after Carol had spent the whole year before having many operations to try and remove her cancer and very intensive chemo, as it was in October 2002 that we found out she had cancer. You will see a few shots with Carol in them and see yet another different look to Carol, I joked only yesterday in the garden with her, that I have had six different looking wife’s in the last six years, but they have still always been the most loveliest and most beautiful wife’s I could have ever wished to have married.

So we set of really early and our first point of call was to the Beer Quarry Caves, not caves in the true sense of the word but an underground quarry first worked by the Romans, that supplied stone for 24 cathedrals including Exeter and St.Pauls, parts of Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Hampton Court and Windsor Castle.

We were the only ones there and got a very personal tour and I got to ask lots of questions, I bet the guide was glad when the tour was all over so her ears could get a much needed rest.

Then it was time to move on to our next planned stop and that was at Pecorama also in Beer, if you love model trains etc and walks in gardens then this is the place for you. You can go on a ride on the trains there (much like the train you will find at Paignton Zoo).

We enjoyed our time there and after a nice lunch moved onto to Seaton as we wanted to have a tram ride that would take us to Colyton, where we planned to enjoy a nice walk before catching the tram back into Seaton.

The trams are really very beautiful, small but have a real charm to them and the journey takes you up alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves and giving an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life. The tram has to go across the main road and as we crossed it I remembered all the times I had cursed the thing when I was out driving and often late to get to a call( old job I had some time ago)I found myself held up as it crossed the road on its way to Colyton.

Once you get to Colyton station it’s a nice walk into the village and we walked around for a few hours before we got the tram back to Seaton. Then a nice walk around Seaton and along the beach before it was time to find a place to have a meal before we set back off home to Paignton.
