One might be forgiven for thinking we were at war and therefore food rationing was in place going by all the food banks now up and running around the country. When you read such statements as “Seeing young mums walk through the door desperate to feed their children. It is tough." You have to ask why that is the case.
Are we talking about young mums living on benefits here? Or young working mums? To be honest I thought both got enough to ensure their children were feed at least, but I may well be wrong and it could be the case that children are going hungry as there is not enough money coming in to buy food.
If that is the case then in this day and age that is a disgrace and needs to be addressed, maybe one way would be to give some of the benefits and working tax credit etc, in the form of food tokens that can only be used to buy food. We are not a third world country and no one even more so children should be going hungry and never being in a situation myself where there was no food to eat in the house, its hard to comprehend just what is going wrong.
There is so much wealth in Torbay and yet we have people who for what ever reason are going without food, or have to rely on a food bank to feed them. I do get angry when I see some people get paid more in a year than most people can earn in a lifetime, maybe what wealth there is just needs to be shared around more fairly, but I do not think that is ever going to happen.
I suppose the only good news is that the Torbay food bank now has enough volunteers to stay open six days a week. Over 60 people a week call into the food bank to pick up food and another 40 has food delivered to their homes. That number one fears will only keep going up and up as long as others keep donating food to the Torbay food bank and all the others around the country.
