Avon Dam Special
I think you have all got the idea now, just what happens when Carol and I go on walks together, yes they all seem to go wrong, we end up walking for many more miles that we planned and Dave R so often nearly never makes it back.
One simple walk around the lanes at Harbertonford, saw us walking for five hours, only to find we some how ended up in Totnes. We had to call a family member over in their car, to take us back to Harbertonford where our car was parked.
Our day out to see the Avon Dam, really was the walk from hell, it was OK for Carol, but then she walks everywhere, that is not the case for me I’m afraid. The last leg of this walk back to the car saw me almost crawling on my hands and knees. I was close to tears as my legs and body were hurting so much.
Mind you it was my own fault; I had only ever been there once before when I was just 18 years old. I had joined a walking club for a short while and walked to the dam with them. I told Carol where we had to park; it was the same place I parked all those years ago, only I had forgotten just how far this parking place was away from the Dam.
I learned later in the walk, that people who go to the dam park in a small car park at a place called Shipley Bridge, only I parked in the car park at the South Brent village hall. Below you will see a map where we started from and where we should have parked. Also some great pictures of the dam under construction, plus a few I took while there. I have kept the number of pictures to as low as I can.
The reservoir cover's an area of approx 33 acres and was completed in 1957.
