This is the preliminary round of the Les Phillips cup. this cup is for all Western league teams.
Roman Glass play in division 1 of the Western league, this season they did not start too well but are on a good run at the moment, and will give us a good test.
Last season in this competition, Buckland went through two rounds beating Gillingham 3-0 Devizes Town 10-0 before going out to Willand Rovers, who went on to win the Les Phillips cup.
Team News.

Many thanks as always Bucklandgull for starting this match day thread. If Buckland can play half as well as they did last weekend against Bristol Manor Farm, then they should have no problems winning this match. They rose to the challenge against a Manor Farm team who were enjoying some good form and its important the lads do not think this game will be a stroll in the park due to playing a team from a lower division.
The weather should be OK on the afternoon of the match if the weather men have got it right, let’s hope the storms we are meant to be having do not come early. I have yet to decide what game I will watch tomorrow, if its dry I might end up watching a South Devon League fixture, if its really wet then at a ground with a stand in it.

Buckland Athletic 6 Roman Glass St George 2 A fairly easy afternoon at the Heath, As Buckland scored six With the Romans notching two goals, it was fairly evident early on that the visitiors were not going to be a match for the yellows, as Buckland attacked at will. Buckland scored early doors when Mike Booth was left unmarked at the far post to head home. 1-0 Straight from the kick off Si Revell found himself free on the edge of the box and fired in atame looking shot that the away keeper made a hash off and the ball somehow bounced over the keeper and the ball trickled into the empty net.2-0 Mike Booth added a third with another header from a Ben Carter cross,3-0 Roman glass gave themselves some hope when a long range effort flew into the top corner giving Kenny Griffiths little chance 3-1 The referee (who i thought had a good game) brought an end to the half with Buckland well in charge. The second half began the Romans reduced the arrears and pulled a goal back after only 30 seconds on the watch,3-2 but this only fired the home team up . Gavin Hammon scored his first for the season from a Revell through ball 4-2 Mike Booth got the man of the match award as he completd his hattrick from a Dan Griffiths cross, a headed hatrick which i think is quite rare and his first hatrick for the club.5-2. The scoring was completed by Right full back Liam Drew who found himself unmarked in the penalty box,he fired home to make the score 6-2 and a place in the next round. Buckland could go a long way in this competition with a little bit of luck in the draw and keep away from the big Bristol based teams. Interesting note Two supporters from Guildford were at the match as they originally were going to the Torquayv Pompey match but were not allowed in as they did not know that the Torquay match was all ticket !!! they were not able to get into Plainmoor so asked around and found out that the next biggest game in South Devon was the game at Buckland . Our gain and Torquay`s Loss. Was Plainmoor sold out i dont think so? ??

The right result in the end, but there must have been a few sweaty paws when they pulled it back to three two. No Plainmoor was far from being sold out and it was not really the clubs fault. The police pick which games they want to attend and charge the club far too much money for their presence.
I'm not 100% sure but I think the police also have some influence over which games have to be all ticket, I believe the games against Exeter, Plymouth will be all ticket games. Portsmouth did ask for more tickets and were told they could not have anymore; it’s the problem when your away end does not hold all that many.
In saying that the away end was closed for many of last seasons games and I expect that has also happened this season, but it only becomes a problem when big games need to take place up at Plainmoor. It’s a shame as the club lose out big time and never get the sort of money for such fixtures that they could. I bet after the police were paid the club would have been lucky to have left the sort of money their normal home games bring in.
Do such games really need to be all ticket anyway? My own view is not really and if clubs like Portsmouth do sell all the tickets they have been given, then as the rest of the ground is unlikely to be a sell out, other areas should be made available to them. In the past the end of the popside has been fenced off to allow away fans to use it, why was that not done?
Clubs like Torquay need to get every penny they can due to the lack of support in the Bay, failure to do so will result in never making any real progress out on the pitch as there will never be the funds for the manager to put together a decent squad.
As far as the result goes it was a shock, but well done to the players for putting in what sounds a good performance, it’s just a shame they could not hold onto all three points. Points they badly need if they are not going to spend the whole season near the bottom of the table.
