Carol and I did what was a first for us, we went on a train, and we got on at Paignton station and were heading for Dawlish. It was good to see the Bay from a different view point and once past Newton Abbot. You can just sit and enjoy the views across the Teign estuary, as the track runs all the way along side it.

You then get to Teignmouth and you can then enjoy wonderful views of the sea, not forgetting all the great tunnels the train goes through. The station at Dawlish sits above the beach and once off the train you just walk under the railway lines to get onto the beach.

Walk to your left and you will be on the famous Dawlish sea wall, the most wonderful railway line anywhere in my view, it’s so expensive to keep it open and running due to the damage from the sea, but it should never ever be closed down and must be maintained at all costs.

If you do feel you have plenty of energy, you can just carry on walking to the next beach called Red Rock beach, there are some great photos of this beach on the Warren and dunes days out thread.

It is a long walk and you must remember you have to walk it back the other way, but its all flat and you can always stop and rest at the Red Rock Café, Barton loves this place for its bread & butter pudding, mind you every where he goes he seems to only eat bread & butter pudding and the odd carvery

Or once under the railway lines you can turn right, here the train tracks are right beside you and you can watch the trains disappear into one of the cliff tunnels. Carry on around the cliff and you discover a great hidden cove and beach.

Over 30 years ago when I was a much younger man I was working in Dawlish, news spread around the town one day,that a dead and very large whale had been washed onto the beach in the hidden cove. At lunchtime I went to have a look at this monster, I could not believe just how big it was and it’s the only one I have ever seen.

Come back under the railway lines and walk through the Dawlish Green, it has a lovely stream running down the middle and here you will find many ducks and the very famous Dawlish black swans. Stop and look over the bridges and play spot the fish, there can be some big ones to be seen at times.

When you get to the end of the green turn left over the bridge and then turn right, time to use the best loo’s you will ever find. There is a picture of them in the collection on this thread; it’s the building with the swans on it. Inside the walls are tiled with some wonderful pictures of the black swans etc.

Then carry on walking further along side the river until you come to a lovely play park. Here you can go over a bridge over the river and start discovering some of the small and hidden back streets of Dawlish.

Any bets Chelstongulls wife will find herself chucked in the car again very soon and find she is in Dawlish.
