It would have been nice to have witnessed a major cup upset today as Upton playing in the Premier Division of the South Devon league, took on Barton Athletic who play in the fifth division at home in the second round of the Herald cup.
Barton came into the game in very good form, winning their last six league matches, but they came up against an Upton side that were just too good for them all over the pitch. It so often looked as if Upton had more players out on the pitch, such was the space they were able to find to enjoy playing their excellent passing game. It was their neat and mostly accurate passing of the ball that played such a big part in Barton’s undoing.
You have to give the Barton lads a great deal of credit as they never once gave up and were still doing all they could near the end of the match to try and get onto the score sheet. A goal or two was the least they deserved for all their hard work and effort they put into the game. But try as hard as you want, when you come up against a side like Upton full of talented players, there is only going to be one outcome.
Upton took a very early lead when a low ball was played into the Barton box from the right hand side of the pitch and Andrew Walker made no mistake giving Lawrence Puedie no chance of making a save. Eathan Foster wearing the number five shirt for Upton hit a great long range shot from 25 yards out that forced Lawrence Puedie into making a very good save.
Upton looked like scoring every time they got near the Barton box and their number 18 Jamie Philpot should have made it two nil to Upton when he was played in on a one on one with the Barton keeper. But he made sure when the next opportunity came his way.
Barton had made a rare break into the Upton box and one of their players was clearly tripped just inside the box, I thought it was a stonewall penalty but the ref never gave it. The Barton players were standing around still moaning at the ref when a long ball was played out of the Upton half into the path of the ever running Jamie Philpot. This time he took his shot well and while I do not think Barton winning the penalty would have chanced the outcome of this match, Upton would not have got their second goal when they did, if it had been given.
Upton soon got their third goal after winning a free kick just outside the Barton Box. Daniel Kingscote took the free kick and aimed the ball towards the fat post, the ball was headed downwards and back across goal for Jamie Philpot to fire home for his second goal of the match. Not sure who got goal number four for Upton but I think it might have been Lee Chamberlain( Upton seldom congratulated any of their goal scorers) Once again it came after Daniel Kingscote took another free kick from outside the Barton box. The ball into the box was blocked and the loose ball then fired into the back of the net.
I’m 100% sure it was number eleven Lee Chamberlain who got goal number five. He was played into the right hand side of the Barton box and as the keeper came out to try and close him down, he cleverly lifted the ball over the keeper into the net.
The ref assured me at the end of the game that Upton scored six goals in the first half, not sure how I missed the goal and I cant tell you when it happened in the half and who scored it. It’s the problem when you are trying to do two things at once, looking through the camera lense and also trying to write down notes.
Onto the second half and Barton moved Kris Darke from the right back position he played in the first half to up wide on the left for the second half. While he played well enough in the first half, he looked so much better up front and with a bit more luck, could have scored one or two goals for his side. Barton played the ball more on the deck in the second half as it must have been clear to their manager the long ball did not work for them in the fist half.
Upton added another goal and it was that man Jamie Philpot who scored it, but Barton were not giving up and came close to pulling a goal back. Liam Young did well to rob an Upton defender of the ball on the edge of the area and fired towards goal a low hard shot that was well saved by the keeper.
Jamie Philpot was played in on a one on one for goal number eight and played in my a neat pass from Daniel Kingscote for goal number nine. Upton could have scored more goals in the second half than they did, but a mixture of some poor finishing and excellent saves by Lawrence Purdie were the reasons they didn’t.
Daniel Kingscote should have scored at least two goals but missed the target on both occasions but finally got on the score sheet when the ball was not cleared out of the Barton box following a corner. The loose ball came to him six yards for goal and he hit a sweet unstoppable shot into the back of the net.
A good game for any neutral to watch played in good sprits by both sets of players and very refereed by Ryan Hedges. He did book Barton’s number four John Fleet who kicked the ball away after a free kick had been awarded against him. At the death he was going to book Barton’s Kris Darke who had a bit too much to say about an offside decision given by the Upton’s lineman Phil Lloyd, but used a bit of common sense considering the game was as good as over both in time terms and the result.
Many thanks for the person from Barton and also Upton for writing out a list of the teams for me. It was also great to meet for the very first time the chairman of Barton who was one of my first members on the Torquay United Fans Forum. A man who was a great poster on the site and one I always had so much respect for. He always made his views in the way posters on any forum should and showed so much just how much football knowledge he processed
