Final Score Waldon Athletic 4 Dartmouth AFC 0
It was a lovely sunny morning in Torbay, but by the time this match kicked off, the sky was very gloomy as was Dartmouth’s performance. Top of the table Dartmouth who until today were unbeaten in the league, were given a good football lesson by Waldon.
Waldon just battled that much harder, worked so very hard and played good neat passing football. They had complete control of the midfield and reduced Dartmouth to hitting long hopeful balls up to Dan Broadway. Dan was given no change by a very determined Waldon defence who prevented Dan from having any real influence over the game.
Straight from the kick off Waldon got their passing game together and looked the much better side, but they so nearly went a goal behind very early in the match. The Waldon number two (Josh Briscombe ? ) brought down a Dartmouth player in the box and the ref who had a first class game, pointed to the spot.
Up stepped the Dartmouth captain Mark Forrester to take the kick, he hit it well enough but Ryan McVitty in goal for Waldon, guessed the right way and made a fine full length diving save. It was the only real chance in the whole of the first half Dartmouth had and the miss turned out to be very costly indeed.
Waldon won a corner and the ball was fired to the far back post where number four Tom Pennicott, rose high in the air too head the ball home. The lead was well deserved and Dartmouth could have no complaints at the break being behind in the match.
The Dartmouth manager’s halftime team talk was very loud indeed and for the first few minutes of the second half, seemed to have had some effect. Right from the off Dartmouth came so close to getting an equalizer, I’m not sure how the ball never crossed the line. After that Waldon once again took full control of the game and it was no surprise when they got a second goal.
Ryan Walton in goal for Dartmouth did well to get his hands to a shot and push the ball out. But he was off his line somewhat and the ball fell nicely to Waldon’s number 15 Josh Mason? He hit a fine volley into the net.
Josh did not have to wait to long to get his second goal, but this time it was just a simple tap in. A shot had been half blocked close to the line and it went behind the keeper and could have been going in, but Josh made sure the ball crossed the line into the back of the net.
Josh was looking for his hat trick and saved his best goal for last. The ball was played into the Dartmouth box from the left hand side and Josh turned so neatly and hit an unstoppable shot past Ryan Walton.
Not content with beating the league leaders by four goals to nil, Waldon did all they could to score even more goals. They came close a number of times and if only one or two players had looked up and saw the space their sub Giannini Giuseppe had kept making for himself in the Dartmouth box, they might have.
A great game to watch even if it was a very cold afternoon, by the time the ref blew up for the end of the match it was almost dark. Why are games not started at 2pm this time of year? It would make more sense. The best team won on the day, but Dartmouth are a much better side than they showed today and will I’m sure be back to winning ways next week.
Heard some rubbish talked about this Waldon side, well let me tell you they are a great bunch of lads who just also happen to be good at playing football. Well done Waldon and good luck to both teams for the rest of the season.
