Final score Brixham AFC 5 Budleigh Salterton 1
A cold afternoon in the Bay despite the sun doing its best to try and warm things up after a very frosty start to the day. But I’m sure the Brixham manager is a very happy bunny as he watched his side win with ease against a very determined Budleigh side. No Stuart Bowker in the side today, but he was there watching the game. As it turned out he was not missed too much as Scott Dodgson had a fine game up front for Brixham.
Brixham made the much better start to the first half but the first half chance fell to a Budleigh player. Their number four K. Riddell had to stand and watch as his headed attempt sailed over the crossbar. Up the other end and Brixham’s number nine Sean Kenny was clearly offside when he received the ball, but the flag did not go up. His first touch was rather poor giving the Budleigh keeper A. Doble, the opportunity to come off his line and dive at the feet of Sean Kenny, winning the ball in the process.
Brixham took the lead after Sean Kenny fired in a good shot on goal, but the keeper really made a big mess up of trying to save it. He put up his hands and the ball just went through them and dropped behind him and over the line. I’m sure Sean will claim the goal and rightly so.
Brixham kept pressing forward looking for a second goal and did not have to wait too long for it to arrive. The ball came into the box from a corner and the Budleigh keeper tried to get his foot onto it but failed. The ball rolled across the goal and Rob Skornia was able to get to it and tap it over the goal line.
Budleigh came close to getting a goal back near the end of the first half. J.Greenslade was played into the Brixham box and found himself one on one with Brixham’s keeper Dan Gillard, but he only managed to hit his shot past the left hand post.
That was it for the first half, Brixham two up and fully deserved to be winning the match, but they came under much more pressure in the second half and ended up playing far to deeply at times. Credit has to be given to the Budleigh players who did all they could to get back onto level terms, but they found the Brixham defence in fine form.
Budleigh’s number eleven had a good chance to pull one back and so nearly did, but his header was just a fraction too high and just cleared the crossbar. Try as they might the Budleigh players could find no way pass the Brixham defence but did in the end with fifteen minutes left on the clock.
Budleigh’s number eleven M.Lever cleverly flicked the ball over the head of a Brixham defender then slide the ball past Dan Gillard into the back of the net. Was a comeback on the cards? Could Budleigh get a second goal and break the hearts of the Brixham players?
Not on you nelly as straight from the restart, Brixham scored their third goal. The ball was played up to Scott Dodgson who hit a powerful low shot into the left hand corner of the goal. It did not take Scott long to get another goal for his team. This time a fine header from a corner.
Budleigh kept pressing forward always looking to try and get another goal, but in doing so left plenty of space for Brixham to mount a few more attacks on the Budleigh goal.
One good long ball from the halfway line picked out a good run on the right by Scott Dodgson who after beating his man played in a good low ball into the Budleigh box to Martin Brown who slid in and got the ball past A. Doble.
A good win for Brixham who worked hard and were the much better team on the day. Just as well for me as I was joking told before the start of the match that as I was there when Brixham were surprising beat by Liverton, a defeat today would have resulted in a ban for me.
