Final Score at full time Galmpton United 2 Buckland Athletic 2nds 2, After extra time still two all, at the end of the penalty shoot out Buckland won by five goals to three
The recent comments I made on a South Devon football League forum concerning the standard of the football on offer today were shot down in flames. I felt the standard was high but others felt since the formation of the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League, the standard in the South Devon League had taken a massive dive downwards.
The gap between the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League Division One East and the South Devon Premier League was very evident in the first round proper of the Throgmorton Devon Premier Cup. Galmpton from the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League Division One East took on Waldon Athletic from the South Devon Premier League. Galmpton won the match by six goals to nil, a score I felt slightly flattered them on the day, I did cover that game.

Since that game the Galmpton manager Darren Watts and Russell Musker have left the club and former boss Richard Ridley was in charge of Galmpton with Tom Kelly for their second round match in this cup against Bovey Tracey. This game was switched to Bovey Tracey and ended up being played on the Bovey 2nds team cricketfield ground.
Galmpton started and finished the game with just ten men, so their one nil win was a good achievement taking into consideration all the problems that were going on in the club. Following this home defeat for Bovey Tracey the first team manager “Mr Shaun Hayward” duly tendered his resignation.
In today’s third round match Galmpton faced one of the best teams from the South Devon premier League Buckland Athletic 2nds, a team that has been scoring goals for fun recently. A team that has its own ambitions of one day playing in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League Division One East.
I felt before the kick-off much would depend on the team Galmpton were able to put out, have any players left recently after the manager walked out? With Buckland’s first team playing at home today, at least no regular first team players would be dropping down to the reserves today.
On a very dull over cast day with very strong winds blowing around the Bay, could Buckland cause a major upset and knock Galmpton out of the cup, it was not something I would have bet against happening.
Today’s game was played in a gale that made it hard for both sides to play the good football they are both capable of and in my honest opinion the best side on the day won in the end. . It was so windy one of the dugout roofs had blown off before the match and at times it was hard just to remain standing. The game ended up being finished in almost darkness and while an enjoyable game to watch, the supporters were happy when the game did finally end.
Buckland started the first half playing against the wind, their poor keeper was unable to kick the ball very far and the ball either went out for a throw-in, or was heading back his way.
The first half chance fell to Galmpton’s Lucas Burgess who turned neatly just outside the Buckland box and got a shot away that was saved by the Buckland keeper Jamie Bradley. Jamie was then forced to make a fine save with his legs close to the post when Darren Vicary turned and shot inside the Buckland box. George Dandridge had a great chance but he scuffed his shot just wide of the left hand post.
Buckland were trying to play a neat passing game and using pace to attack the Galmpton back line, but the conditions made that almost an impossible task. With the first half conditions more favouring the side kicking with the wind, Galmpton took the lead. They won a free kick out on the left hand side that was fired high into the box, the ball ended up just out side if the right hand side of the box and Darren Vicary hit a left football shot into the far left hand corner of the goal.
Before the halftime break Galmpton scored again, this time it was Matt Barkwell who hit a half volley into the back of the net when the ball was loose inside the Buckland box. The referee blew up for halftime and the spectators including myself headed for the club house for a much needed warm up.
The second half got underway and Buckland’s Shane Shobbrook turned neatly in the Galmpton box and his shot was saved low down by Ken Griffiths. But Buckland did not have to wait too much longer to get their first goal that would set up the second half nicely. Gavin Collins from six yards out hit a powerful low left foot shot into the back of the net.
George Dandridge was hacked down and for a second things looked like they might get out of hand with the usual handbag moments that happen from time to time in games, thankfully there was only some pushing and shoving before the referee got his book out.
Buckland then got an equalizer, a shot fired into the back of the net inside the left hand side of the box by Nick Hayman. Buckland’s Ben Head hit a 20 yard shot wildly over the crossbar an I felt at this stage if anyone was going to find a winner it would be Buckland.
It looked like Galmpton’s Darren Vicary was going to win the game for his team when he hit a shot close in, but somehow it got defected over the crossbar for a Galmpton corner. Galmpton then won a free kick just outside the Buckland box, but Darren Vicary put his effort on goal just wide of the left hand post.
Right at the end of normal time, Ken Griffiths somehow clawed the ball away when it looked like it was going in at the top left hand corner of the goal and by doing so the game went into extra time.
Galmpton were unlucky not to take the lead again when a shot from the edge of the box hit the right hand post, up the other end Buckland’s Lee Chapman hit the side netting and we all thought the ball had hit the back of the net from where we were standing.
It was getting even darker and hard to see even the numbers on the player’s shirts, but Galmpton so nearly won the game at the end of extra time. A Cross came into the Buckland box from the right hand side and close in Matt Barkwell headed the ball goalward and it looked as if it was going to hit the back of the net but somehow Jamie Bradley managed to get a hand on the ball and get it over his crossbar .
The referee blew up for the end of extra time and it was down to the dreaded penalty shoot out to decide which team were going into the next round. The referee decided to use the goal furthest away from the club house, this meant all the supporters had to walk up the other end, it also helped the kick takers as they had the wind behind them.
Buckland’s Lee Chapman took the first kicked and scored; Galmpton’s Mark Newbould did likewise. Shame Shobbrook made it two one for Buckland and then Jamie Bradley saved a tame effort from Darren Vicary. Ken Griffiths then saved Gavin Collins effort and it game on again.
Galmpton’s Matt Barkwell then hit the underside of the crossbar with his effort and up stepped Buckland’s Sam Peardon who only needed to score his kick to put his side into the next round which he did.
This was the first time I have watched the Buckland second team play and have to say I was very impressed with them, very well organised with plenty of pace in the team. They fully deserved to win today but it was always going to be a game of two half’s thanks to the gale force winds. In my humble opinion this Buckland side could easily be at home in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League Division One East
