I wonder if back in 1977 when Buckland formed a junior club playing at Sandringham Park, if in their widest dreams they ever thought they would be where they are today. But even back then it soon became the biggest junior club in the area, running a total of six sides in six different age groups for several seasons.
The start of Buckland’s senior football life came about in the 1987/88 season when they were accepted into the Devon and Exeter League, playing their home games at Coach Road. In 1990-91 season the club moved to Decoy That season saw them win the Wheaton Trophy and finally achieved their dream of being promoted to the Premier Division in 1992-93, having by them moved to their old ground at Homers Lane.
For the 2005-06 season Buckland started life playing their home games at their new permanent home, Homers Heath on the Kingskerswell Road. A wonderful ground with such a warm welcome and one that has now been vastly improved.
Entrance to the main ground in now via a turnstile and this has meant the front door to the main club house has to be locked until halftime. Yesterday for the first time I saw for myself all the recent improvements and you have to take your hat off to all the people at the club who have worked so hard to get the club this far.
But its not over yet and the club has his eyes set on gaining promotion to the Southern league and that is something that will be achieved at some point, fingers crossed this will be the season that dream comes true.
Buckland Athletic are a club very worthy of all the support it can get, progress comes at a high price and football lovers in Newton Abbot should really appreciate the fact they have such an ambitious club on the their doorstep.
