SDL Div 4 Chelston V Meadowbrook 24th Sept 1988
South Devon League Division Four
Chelston Fc v Meadowbrook Athletic
Saturday 24th September 1988 I was never really interested in football programmes until I set up the history room and the programmes room on the Torquay Fans Forum.. I soon discovered that for the clubs historians some of the content that was being found in old programmes was often missing pieces of the jigsaw to a puzzle they had been unable to solve.
I have searched all over the TFF looking for a very old post that contained an old map of the area close to Armada Park but have been unable to find it. On this map it showed a field that was being used as a football pitch on Nut Bush Lane not that far away from Armada Park.
The two main historians on the TFF were unable to find out anymore information about this football field or who played there; well I have the answer now thanks to this programme.
You will see on the programme notes the club was formed from a nucleus of boy scouts in 1925 and they played their football at Victoria Park opposite the Haywain pub. They later moved to a field that is now numbers 71 to 83 Nut Bush Lane before moving again to Armada Park in 1956.
Reading through the programme you get the impression Chelston FC was a very well run club and one that was very much in the heart of its community.
There are some interesting adverts in this programme, but the one I love the best is for the Chelston FC Bingo night every Thursday at 8pm in the Co-op hall behind the Old Mill Road shops.
