Plymtree village fayre 29th August 2016
I always try and find something new to do on Bank Holidays and spend a good amount of time on line looking for events I have not been to before. I was close to giving up my search this morning and then at the very last minute I found out Plymtree Village had a fayre on.
Plymtree Village is off the main road from Cullumpton to Honiton and the fayre is held in fields outside of the village itself. A show jumping event was held in the morning but the main fayre opened at 12pm which was about the time we got there.
What was surprising was this fayre was completely free, but you could put some money in a bucket which Lyn did on our way out at the end. Plymtree Village which is about a mile away from where the event was held is a very small village and it always amazes me how these small communities put on such events.
It was not the biggest fayre we have ever been too, but there was enough to keep us busy and entertain us while we were there. Hotdogs just £2 and a large burger £3, such a change from the rip-off prices we paid at the Totnes Show last month.
The youngsters put on a fine horse riding display in the main ring, but the gun dogs during their display disobeyed nearly every command they were given, which in its own way made it more entertaining than it would have been.
Not sure how Punch & Judy made it so far in land, but the kids watching their show seemed to enjoy it. There was a large brass band playing, but they played the most slowest and dreary music I have ever heard played at any event.
We stood and watched the balloon man make an incredible monkey but I do think it will be a hobby Lyn or I take up anytime soon. We stayed watching so long as we could not work out what he was making, not until the very last twist this way and then that way.
Our new road between Torquay and Newton Abbot makes getting out of the Bay on a bank holiday such and easy affair these days, before the road was built it could take you and hour to get from Paignton to the Penn Inn Roundabout. We left home at 11am and just one hour later we were parking our car in the fayre car park.
A great day out and hats off to all the people who put in so much time organising this fayre, it is what makes village communities so very special.
Many village fetes and fayre’s date back to the last century, but as far as I was able to find out this fayre has now been running 40+ years. It moved from its former home at the Plymtree Recreation Ground in the village to its new site Weaver Lane, just outside the village in 2014.
