Final Score Teignmouth 4 Budleigh Salterton 4
Match Preview
Another football season coming to an end and for me the fifty forth season I have spent my Saturday afternoons on the touchline. I was about eight years old when I became the Newton Spurs mascot when they were in the Western League; I wonder just how many games I have watched over my lifetime.

It is a wonderful game and I have witnessed so many great games with goals scored in them that were as good if not better than goals selected for goal of the season on match of the day. I have seen skill, flair, great ball control, great team spirit, happiness and tears; it is what the game is all about. Yes I have seen some things in some games I wish I hadn’t, some ugly moments, but thankfully they have been few and far between.
My enjoyment on a Saturday afternoon has only been made possible by the players, managers and all the people who give up so much of their own free time to help run our local clubs and leagues, without you all there would be no local football. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for providing me and so many others with Saturday afternoon entertainment at its very best.
It was on the 3rd September 2011 the last time I watched Teignmouth in action at Coombe Valley, back then my match reports were far more basic than they are today.

I was going to cover a game here in Paignton today, but in the end changed my mind as I thought it would be nice to visit Coombe Valley again and watch Teignmouth AFC final game of this season.
Before today’s game Teignmouth sat proudly at the top of the table, they might not have had the best start to the season this time around, but they worked their way to the top where you might expect them to be.
A win or even a draw into today’s game would guarantee the runners up spot for Teignmouth, but they will have to wait until Stoke Gabriel complete their three remaining away games, to know if they will finish the season as champions.
Stoke are away today at Appledore and a win or a draw for Stoke would mean that even if Teignmouth were to lose today against the Robins, the second place finish would still be theirs.
A win for both Teignmouth and Appledore today would mean Stoke Gabriel would have to win one and at least draw one of there then two remaining games to finish level on points but would win the title of goal difference.
Budleigh Salterton have had a very poor season and are only being kept of the bottom of the table by Exwick Villa, a club that had so many problems to overcome at the start of the season. The best finish Budleigh can now hope for is third from bottom if Totnes & Dartington do not pick up many points in their three remaining fixtures.
Both Clubs League Record To Date This Season.
Teignmouth have played a total of thirty three games, winning twenty two, drawing four and losing seven giving them a total of seventy points. Along the way they have scored seventy six goals, conceded forty six, giving them a plus thirty goal difference.
Budleigh Salterton have played a total of thirty one games, winning just seven of them, drawing two and losing twenty two giving them a total of twenty three points.. Along the way they have only managed to score thirty eight goals and conceded a whopping one hundred and five, giving them a minus sixty seven goal difference.
Looking at the league stats it is clear the Robins have had major defensive problems this season, Teignmouth will be looking to finish the season in style and this could end up being a high scoring match.
Match Report
I had a small amount of trouble finding the ground for some strange reason, but was very pleased once inside it to find Nick Hancock from Buckland Athletic there. He was a great help today ensuring I wrote all the correct goal scorers etc down in my notepad.
Football is a funny old game, one minute you are sat there thinking this is a bit of a nothing game and then as if by magic the game turns into one that was much more like a cup tie. Yes the start of this match really had that end of the season game feel to it, but what a great entertaining second half we were all treated too.
I have to give great credit to the Budleigh Salterton players, they went two goals behind and in the end so nearly left Coombe Valley with all three points, what a battling performance and I only wonder why they have ended up second from bottom in the table this season.
There was nothing to write down about for the first twenty minutes or so, except the first booking of the match when Teignmouth’s captain Scott Baxter brought down Alex Paltridge who had made a good run to the edge of the Teignmouth box. Alex Paltridge took the kick himself but his effort went wide of the right hand post.
In the blink of an eye the ball was in the Robins box and a shot on goal was blocked, but Myles James was able to get onto the end of the loose ball and fire it over the line just inside the right hand post. Teignmouth came close to adding to their lead when a good ball was played into the box from the right hand side, but the final shot went just wide of the post.
Budleigh came close to levelling the score when the Teignmouth right back tried to dribble the ball out of danger and got robbed of the ball. One quick pass played in Mike White who hit a good shot that well saved by Luke Ashford, diving low and getting one hand on the ball to turn it behind for a corner. The resulting corner saw the ball headed over the crossbar by Karl Riddell.
Mike White hit another good shot this time from the edge of the Teignmouth box that was just wide of the target and just after this Teignmouth added to their lead. A good high cross from the right hand side of the pitch into the Robins box was headed home by Ryan Bush.
That was it for the first half and the start of the second half was much the same as the start of the first half, not a lot going on. But then the game started to change when Teignmouth’s Scott Telford hacked down a Robin’s player in the box. The spot kick was taken by Karl Riddell who made no mistake giving his side some much needed hope.
The game was starting to open up with both teams looking for the next goal; Robin’s captain Callum Shipton took a free kick just outside the Teignmouth box that cleared both the wall and the crossbar.
The Robins’ got themselves back onto level terms with a goal scored by Rafael Castille-Jos, it looked to everyone including the linesman that he fouled a player just outside the box before firing a low shot across the keeper into the back of the net. It looked for a while the goal might not be given as the linesman kept waving his flag and the match referee then went over to talk with him. In fairness Devon Campbell was closer to the incident that anyone else and was happy no foul had been committed and allowed the goal.
Teignmouth quickly regained the lead when Jack Greenslade hit a shot from the edge of the box that was unlikely to beat Alan Doble until it took a big defection of Robin’s Tommy Evans that left the keeper wrong football and unable to make the save.
A cruel blow for the Robin players who had worked so hard against the team at the top of the table to get back into the match. But Teignmouth were not able to celebrate for too long as once again the Robin’s levelled the score.
The Robin’s won a free kick that was fired into the Teignmouth box; two or three shots on goal were blocked before from a tight angle Rafael Castille-Jos fired the ball home. Teignmouth came close to regaining the lead when a shot was pushed onto the post by Alan Doble with the ball dropping back down into the box but was miss-kicked behind for a goal kick
I’m not sure this is how the Teignmouth players expected the game to pan out and they never expected to find themselves behind in a game in which they took a two goal lead. But that is what happened when 30 yards out Robin’s Mark Lever looped the ball high into the air. The ball looked like it was going wide of the right hand post, but it hit the back of the net with the Teignmouth keeper not moving one inch from where he was standing.
Teignmouth won a corner and scored from it, not too sure Scott Baxter knew too much about it as the ball seemed to come off his chest and into the back of the net. When the Robins were losing the game I said to Nick I felt a draw would be a fair result and so now with the score at four all that surly would be the final score.
From a Teignmouth corner Jamie Moore hit a great shot that pulled out the save of the match as Alan Doble made a wonderful diving one handed save. From the resulting the ball was headed over the crossbar.
Then came the miss of the match and Robin’s Karl Riddell must still be wondering why he did not secure the whole three points for his side. Luke Ashford had made a fine save from one shot but with him down on the floor the ball went to the centre of the box to Karl who only needed to hit it first time into the empty net. But he wanted to take a steadying touch and by the time he got his shot away Luke had dived back across his goal line blocking the shot.
Tame first half, great second half and a good game to finish of this seasons reporting, (well I might do one more) many thanks to the match referee for his help with the team sheets and the nice man from Budleigh.
