Newton Abbot Horse Racing 4th May 2018
While I was born and grew up in Newton Abbot I have never seen a live horse race. I have seen plenty on the TV and I thought it was about time I put that right. When I was a young man I was always at the racecourse on a Wednesday evening as I loved stockcar racing.
As a very small boy I remember my brother who worked for a local butcher in Queen Street Newton Abbot, taking me with him once when he was delivering meat to the circus that was set up at the racecourse. A day I will never forget as I was taken to meet Coco The clown who was a famous clown back then.
I also went to the racecourse when Red Rum was there, I do not believe he raced there that day and may well have been retired and just taken around the country on show. I have never been a gambler so that might be the real reason I have never been interested in horse racing.
But in the job I am doing right now I do deliver to the racecourse before each race meeting and I also deliver to the Leisure Lounge Café that has a great view of the track. The problem has been never having a day off when a race meeting was on and so I was very surprised to see I had been given today off.
After checking the time of the first race I made my way over to the Leisure Lounge Café and waited for the action to begin. There was thirty minutes between each race and about twenty seconds to grab the photos as they went past where I was standing.
One lap of one of the races was in heavy rain as can be seen in a few of the photos below. While I do not plan to become a horse racing fan, I did find it was a great subject to photograph and will do it again sometime.
