Bodmin Jail If you fancy a day out with a difference then Bodmin Jail is the place for you. Bodmin Jail was designed by Sir John Call and built in 1779 by prisoners of war, and was operational for 150 years, in which it saw over 50 public hangings. It was the first British prison to hold prisoners in separate cells (though often up to 10 at a time) rather than communally The public executions were always guaranteed crowd pullers in years gone by. As you enter the jail and walk down the stairs the air begins to cool. The jail doesn't need pyro-technics to enhance the experience, you can sense the past just by walking around. You can visit the condemned cell and some grisly exhibits telling of the lives and imprisonment of the inmates of Bodmin Jail. The last hanging took place as recently as 1909. The Crown Jewels and Doomsday Book were stored here during the Great War. Please watch out for the ghosts they really still live in the jail
