Daddyhole Plain 12th May 2019
I have been planning to do a drone flight over Daddyhole Plain for a while now, but the weather and winds have meant I have had to wait a while. It is a place I have been to so many times and one of my favourite walks in the Bay is from Daddyhole along the coast path to the harbour. A walk that takes you to the natural arch known as The London Bridge.
But why is it named Daddyhole? Daddy is an old English name for the devil and according to local legend a cave was formed by a piece of fallen limestone and the devil came to live in the cave at the bottom of the cliff.
Torbay has many such tales that originated in the Middle Ages up to the seventeen century and the author of the 1850 book ‘Legends of Torquay’ set off to recover folk tales of the area before they were swept away by modernity, you can read the full story of the Devil at Daddyhole in that book.
I set off from Paignton at 8am as I wanted to be there before it got busy and while there was a fresh breeze, the drone coped with it well and I got all the shots I was after. I thankfully had taken my DSLR camera with me and was able to get some shots of the cruise ship Artania that is in the Bay today.
I have never walked down the path on the left hand side of the parking area at Daddyhole but I put that right today. Just a short way down is a pathway on the right hand side that goes around in a loop. It’s not for the fainthearted as you get to the point where you have to go up some steep steps with a hand rail that did not feel to secure in places.
Back on the main path I soon found another path on the right hand side and what a find this path was. A place where I was all alone with the most wonderful views and it sure gave me the feeling I am so glad to be alive.
No matter how run down some parts of the Bay are right now, the natural beauty of Torbay can never be destroyed and there is still so many places we can go and enjoy it all for free.
