Man Sands & St Mary’s Bay 9th July 2019
I had hoped after yesterday’s scary event that my day out today would go without and problems, boy how wrong I was. But it was not me in trouble today it was my very much loved drone. I have mostly flown the drone over cliffs etc to get the shots I would not normally be able to get and in all the flights I have done I have had no problems with any seagulls.
That was not the case today and after using up one battery and moving to another nearby location I inserted another battery and sent the drone on its way. It them came under attack from not just one seagull but five of them. I very quickly pressed the return to home button and twice I saw it by a seagull, both times it recovered and kept its coarse back to the point from where it took off.
I decided there and then to pack the drone away and get out my camera to carry on trying to get some good and interesting shots. From the end of Sharkham Point I headed along the coast path back towards Brixham high over St Mary’s Bay. It was a path I had never walked before and soon found myself talking with a lady for a good half an hour who was staying in one of the chalets that can be seen from the pathway.
It is no wonder my nickname as a young boy was yapper, get talking with me and you might as well phone home and say you might be late home for your tea. We thanked each other for a really enjoyable chat and I turned around and made my way back to my car that was parked at Sharkham Point.
I did not want the day out to end and started wishing while at the end Of Sharkham Point if I should have done what I have always wanted to do and spend some time on Man Sands a beach I have never been too.
I looked on the sat nav and soon found out the National Trust car park for Man Sands was only a twelve minute drive away and so I got the engine started and headed over that way. I like so many people my age feel my life clock is clicking so much faster these days and for that reason alone, I want to cram in as much as I can when I have any free time.
I got to the car park and put my £2 in the honesty box and started walking down the lane towards the beach. I did not realise it was three quarters of a mile long and very steep. I thought to myself I might have been better walking there from Sharkham Point that was until I saw the coast path that goes up from the beach to the point. I would not have fancied walking up that path and while I knew the walk back to the car park was all uphill, I was glad with the choice I made.
Man Sands is just so natural and completely unspoilt with some great rock pools and imposing cliffs. There is some evidence of past cliff falls and it is a place where you won’t find many other people due to its location.
There are no toilets or anywhere to buy a drink so you would need to make sure you take one and maybe some food as well. I still find it amazing that there are still places on my doorstep I have never been to before, but that is another one crossed of my list and one I am so glad I made the effort to visit.
