Carnival Magic & Valor 20th June 2020
Torbay has always enjoyed visits from cruise ships in the summer months, full of paying guests and many of them normally come ashore. That was in normal times when the world did not have to deal with a killer virus that was unknown before.
Most of these ships would have arrived in the morning and leave sometime in the evening; they came in close enough to always get some good shots of them. Sadly like so many other businesses the cruise line industry has been hit very hard and just what do you do with a whole load of empty ships.
To avoid huge costs having the ships in docks etc, many are just anchored close to land, but far enough out not to incur any costs. Two of the Carnival line ships have been in Torbay for over a week now, along with at least three other merchant ships.
I knew a third one of the Carnival ships was heading for the Bay this morning, but as it turned out Carnival Breeze only stayed for an hour and I think to bring supplies to the crew on the Magic and Valor ships.
Sadly while the Breeze was here, it was raining and very dull and not worth the trip over to Torquay to take any photos of the three ships together which was a shame as that might never happen again in the Bay.
It was a bit brighter after lunchtime and off I went, to be honest I really needed to get out of the house for an hour or two. Low cloud and sea mist hung around the ships that were further out than I imagined. I had my longest lens with me and knew I could easily fill the frame with anyone of the ships.
I took the photos from down by Thatcher Rock and every time I go there, I remind myself how lucky I am to live in Torbay.
