Ipplepen V Babbacombe Corinthians 16th Oct 2010
The final score was an unbelievably three goals to one to Ipplepen and the Babbacombe Corinthians players must be wondering how they lost a game when they were clearly the better side and for most of the match outplayed an Ipplepen side who just stood and watched good moves develop all around them before they decided they should try and break up what was attack after attack in the first half and Ippelpen were very lucky to get to half time only one goal behind.
The Ipplepen defenders were so guilty of just ball watching and Cory’s midfield and forward players were always in acres of space and as a result were able to not only control the game but create a number of very good chances.
When Ipplepen did have the ball they just hit long and hopeful balls from the back no where near any forward Ipplepen player much to their frustration after making good runs and finding space to receive the ball. When Ipplepen did try to play the ball through midfield the player on the ball always wanted to beat one man to many and ended up losing the ball when there were players who could have been played in if the player had looked up and saw what was going on ahead of him.
Cory look an early lead after a harmless ball was played forward on the ground that should have been dealt with by a Pen defender who just let the ball go past him to be picked up by a Cory forward who ran toward the box looked up and squared the ball across the box to his strike partner. The ball ended up behind his strike partner but due to the Pens defenders standing and ball watching, the forward had all the time in the world to do a 360% turn and hit a left foot shot into the bottom right hand corner of the net.
Cory nearly made it two nil after another fine move that resulted firstly in a very good shot, then a wonder save by the Ipplepen keeper flying through the air and tipping the ball onto the crossbar and back into play only for the ball to drop at the feet of a Cory player who should have just tapped the ball over the line but instead put the ball the wrong side of the post.
Just before that action a great ball had been played once again through the static Ipplepen defence out slightly wide on the left hand side and the Cory player hit a good shot across the keeper that only just went wide of the far post.
The Cory keeper looked to me as if playing in goal was not his regular position, I may have got that wrong but he sure had nothing to do for the whole of the first half as Ipplepen failed to get the ball up to their front men. Ant had one half chance just outside the box on the left hand side that he had to hit early as he was being closed down and his shot lacked and real power and went up in the air making an easy catch for the Cory keeper. Pens number nine did however have a very good chance on a very rare through ball and he was inside the box and should have hit the target at least but ended up blasting the ball high over the crossbar.
So onto the second half and after having another animated team talk from Pens five foot nothing manager not a lot changed really and Pens forward line were still being starved of the ball and it was starting to look that the only way they would get the ball into the box and maybe create a chance was going to be from corners or free kicks.
Ant did well to hold off a Cory defender and fire in a shot on goal just inside the area and the Cory keeper got a bit lucky as he somehow blocked the shot on his goal line with his leg.
Ippplepen that got and equaliser after Cory conceded a needless free kick out wide on the right, the ball was floated up high into the air with no pace on it what so ever and dropped down from the air around the six yard line, for some strange reason the Cory keeper had come way off his line as the ball dropped onto Ipplepens number nine head and looped back up in the air and in almost slow motion when over the Cory keeper and then dropped just under the crossbar and into the net.
At this stage of the game it still looked like Cory who would win the game and were only denied more goals by some brilliant goal keeping by the Ipplepen keeper. He made another fine flying through the air save getting the ball up onto the cross bar only this time going out for a corner.
He did spill one shot from Cory’s number nine and the ball then ran along the goal line and it looked like it was going to be a simple tap in for the Cory player on the far post but somehow he only managed to kick the ball against the post.
Ant was then substituted for the second game in a row and while the manager may claim it was an inspired substitution as the team went of to score two more goals, I would not agree as the team then looked weaker up front and I could not see where a goal would come from.
Ant was standing beside me when the most perfect through ball was played into the box to Pens number seven who was instantly on a one on one with the Cory keeper and only had to slot the ball past him which he did with ease. Ant turned to me and said how come I never had one ball like that all game played for me to get on the end off and how right he was to ask that question.
Ipplepen failed to create another good chance from open play and due to some poor defending when the ball was there to be cleared scored a third goal. The ball should never have found its way to Ipplepens number seven but it did and to be fair to him he hit a sweet half volley that gave the keeper no chance as he was at the other end of the goal when the ball reached Pens number seven as he expected a defender to clear the ball out of the area.
My first chance to try out my new Finepix SH10 at a football match and I’m so glad I did some searching on the web this morning to try and find out if there was a way to change a default setting on the camera. In a special sports mode you can set the camera to do a burst of shots and it takes seven in total only it was taking them at an unbelievable ten frames per a second meaning all seven shots were taken in less than on second and I felt that was just to fast for the sort of shots I was looking to take.
I found out that once set in the burst mode I could just click on button and then I got a menu that had a list of speeds that could be selected and after a bit of practice before I left home I set it on three frames per a second and it worked perfectly for me at the game. Going to need a bit of time to get fully up to speed using my SH10, but so pleased with the results I’m getting and so glad I took the plunge and went and bought it. To be by a corner flag and to be able to zoom in right on top of the keeper in the goal the other end and then to get perfect shots as well shows not only the power of the 30x optical zoom lens, but the incredible built in stabilisation that ensures at full focal length your shots are still super crisp
