Roy Holmes memorial Match 29th August 2021
I decided not to do an actual match report today, I just wanted to be at Homers Heath to pay my respects to the most wonderful man I have ever met connected with football.
A man so well liked, loved and respected by everyone who knew him and had the pleasure to meet him. A giant of a man with a very big heart who was always so welcoming anytime you set foot in the Heath.
I have not been to the Heath since Big Roy passed away, I just felt such a big part of the club would be missing as Big Roy would not be sat at his table and I would not be able to spend a good half hour with him before the match.
So many people have such wonderful memories of the time they were in the company of Mr Buckland, fond memories that will last forever as Big Roy will never be forgotten not just because of who he was, but the wonderful football club he created.
I knew in my heart this morning that no matter what my feelings were about going to the Heath, I had to be there for Big Roy. But while I never saw him today I felt him in every single part of the ground I walked in.
During the game I felt just a few rain drops on my arm and looked up, there was a big cloud overhead and I swear big Roy was riding it looking down on us all.
Billy Holmes gave a very moving talk before the match, I knew from his words he was talking about the very same Roy we all knew and loved. It brought tears to my eyes because Roy was so much too so many people.
I would like to thank Adam Castle for coming over and saying hello, it made me feel a part of the Buckland family again, there is no other club like Buckland and that comes from a true Buckland boy who grew up there.
The match was a very entertaining affair and I enjoyed watching it with Tom Besford, Buckland took a very early lead and held onto it deep into the second half.
The Devon & Cornwall side got back on level teams with a header at the far post. It was one of those games you hoped there would be no further goals. A draw would have been perfect as both sides played well but The Devon and Cornwall side scored again to take the lead.
I would like to thank everyone at the club for putting on such a wonderful day and giving us all the chance to pay our respects to Big Roy. The Buckland family will continue to keep the club going forward as Roy would have wanted.
