A&S Paving Devon Intermediate Cup 3rd Round
Match Referee Ryan Zarezadeh
Final Score Galmpton Reserves 4 Sandymere Blues 0
Match preview.
One big problem with the South Devon league is there is no way of knowing if a match is on or off due to bad weather. I decided at the last minute today to forget the game I was going to cover and cover a game I knew was defiantly on just in case.
I have very little knowledge on the format of the Devon Intermediate Cup, but I do know this is a third round game that will give me the opportunity of not only seeing how good the Galmpton Reserves are, but also the chance to watch a team from North Devon in action.
As this game was a last minute change for me, I have not had the time to check out the results and current form of both clubs, so I will just concentre on the match report and match photos.
Match Report
Not many people in the south of Devon would have heard of Sandymere Blues FC. For your information the club play in the North Devon Football League and their ground is between Westward Ho! And Northam not far away from Bideford.
The team travelled down the A361 and the M5 motorway, but got caught up in the A380 road works. But as they had left early enough got to the Memorial Ground in plenty of time.
Sunshine, cloud, rain and a rainbow during today’s match, but sadly for the Sandymere Blues, the sun did not shine on them. I personally think the final score was a bit hard on Sandymere as they were in the game for most of it. But Galmpton were the better side on the day, stronger and more determined and fully deserve to win.
Match referee Ryan Zarezadeh blew his whistle for the start of the match and for a good while it was all even stevens with neither side being able to get on top.
Sandymere’s Jamie Bowden had the first half chance of the match, but the giant of a keeper in goal for Galmpton Scott Staddon blocked the shot with his foot on the right hand post.
Thomas Armstrong came close to scoring what would have been the goal of the season for Galmpton. He hit the ball on the volley on the halfway line with real power; Toby Ayres in goal for Sandymere did well to tip the ball over the crossbar.
Galmpton forced three corners on the trot, but was unable to make any of them count. Up the other end and Sandymere’s Henry Joy took a shot from the edge of the Galmpton box, but his shot went well wide of the left hand post.
Galmpton then took the lead in the match, a good run and cross from the left hand side of the pitch by Thomas Armstrong saw the ball ending up pinging around the goal mouth. Samuel Lamburn was able to stab the ball close in over the line.
Aidan Slade the number seven for Sandymere picked up a loose ball down the right hand side, when he got too the corner of the box he fired a low shot across the keeper, but the ball ended up going just wide of the left hand post.
Sandymere then won a corner but the ball into the box was headed clear to the edge of the Galmpton box, but it fell kindly for Matt Sutton who hit a good ball at goal that forced Scott Staddon to reach up and tip over the crossbar. This was still anyone’s game to win.
I believe it was Galmpton’s goal scorer Samuel Lamburn who burst down the right hand side of the pitch and fired in a cross come shot that came crashing down on the crossbar and back into play.
The one and only booking of the match came about when Galmpton’s Luke Horrwll jumped two footed into a challenge, thankfully he made little contact with the Sandymere player.
The match referee blew up for halftime, the Galmpton players made for the dressing rooms, while the Sandymere players decided to stay out. The heavens opened up and we were treated to some heavy wet and cold rain. Thankfully it did not last too long.
Onto the second half that Galmpton started on the front foot. But the first real chance fell to Jordan Wonnacott. Sandymere had won a free kick twenty five yards out. The ball was floated into the Galmpton box and Jordon got his head on it, but sadly for him the ball flew over the crossbar.
Jordon then took a very hopeful shot from all of thirty yards, but his effort went well wide of the left hand post.
He then had another good chance to get his side back onto level terms. Matt Sutton made a good run down the left hand side of the pitch and fired in a low ball to the far post. Jordon got a boot on it but the ball hit the side netting.
We were then treated to yet another wonder shot, this time from Lucas Burgess for Galmpton. He hit a powerful twenty five yard effort that Toby Ayres did well to tip onto his crossbar.
Charlie Rowe was put clear in on goal for Galmpton with just the keeper to beat, but took his shot far too early and from too far out and ended up missing the target.
Galmpton were now playing some attractive football, Carl Bradley made a good run into the left hand side of the Sandymere box and from a tight angle forced a good save by the left hand post.
The Sandymere players were working hard to try and get back into the match but you knew the next goal in the match was going to be a very important one. Lucas Burgess made a good run down the right hand side and just as he got inside the Sandymere box fired a shot away. Toby Ayres did well to beat the shot down but the loose ball fell right at the feet of Charlie Rowe to fire home into the empty net.
With Galmpton bullying the Sandymere players off the ball and winning most of their tackles, you sensed there was no way back for the blues. That was confirmed just minutes later when Galmpton scored again. This time a low ball into the box from the left hand side fired home close in by Carl Bradley.
To rub salts into the Sandymere players Tyler James made a mess at an attempted clearance and sliced the ball into the back of his own net.
So there it ended four goals to nil for Galmpton, but as I said earlier in the game it could have gone either way.
Many thanks to both clubs with your help with the team sheets. Hightlight of the day was bumping into the Stoke Gabriel Legend and former lead singer of the Dartbeats, My Raymond Frank Tucker
A very enjoyable game to watch, good luck to Galmpton in round four ans wishing a safe trip back home for the Sandymere Blue’s.
