Final Score Liverton Ladies 0 Saltash Woman 4
Match preview
After covering the Buckland V Ilfracombe match yesterday in horrible wet conditions, I thought it would be nice to cover another game today that at least would be in sunshine.
The only local game I could find was the Liverton Ladies V Saltash Woman and has I have covered a good number of woman’s football games over the years I thought this would be a perfect game to do a match report on.
I have covered lots of the Liverton men’s teams games, but never the ladies, I think I am correct in saying they were only formed last season. They play their football in the Western Division of The South West Regional Woman’s Football League.
Before today’s match they were in 5th place in the league table on seven points. They had played a total off eight games, winning two of them, drawing one and losing five with a minus five goal difference. They enjoyed a surprise two nil win last weekend against the league leaders Plymouth Argyle Women U23s Team.
Saltash Woman are currently in 6th place in the league table on two points, ( it looks like there are only six teams in this league) They have played seven matches in total and have yet to record a win so far this season, they have drawn two of their matches and lost the other five. They have a minus thirteen goal difference. Last weekend they faced an away trip against Feniton Womens FC 1st and lost the match by five goals to three.
Will the Liverton ladies follow up on last weekends excellent result, or will the Saltash Woman get that first win they are looking for.
Match Report
I know now why I never did the football pools; I am no good at predicting results. I would have put this game down as a home win and how wrong I would have been.
The match referee had to wait an eternity to get the game underway due to the Saltash Woman not taking to the field when they should have. It was the same story at the start of the second half.
Finally the referee was able to blow his whistle and the action started and it did not take long for Saltash to get on top. The first effort on goal came as a result of a corner for Saltash, the ball came into the box and was hit by Dee Newman but her effort flew over the crossbar.
The Liverton defence were playing a high line which left far to much space in behind them, One very strong run by Nicola Champion got into that space clear in on goal and got a shot away, the effort was saved by the feet of the Liverton keeper Emma Ayres.
The danger signs were there for Liverton and they soon found themselves a goal behind. Hayley Ranachan played a neat one two with a fellow team mate and finished coolly giving the keeper no chance of making a save.
Another good through ball spelt even more trouble for the Liverton defence; Dee Newman raced onto the ball and cleverly chipped the ball over the keeper. Two nil and Liverton did not have any answers and there was worst to come.
Hayley Ranachan was in the left hand side of the Liverton box and hit a good shot that just went wide of the far post. Another through ball played just inside the Liverton half saw Nicola Champion burst onto it and run strongly towards the goal and firing the ball home. Was this a team that had yet to win a game this season? This was the pattern for most of the first half, Hayley Ranachan hit another good shot that cleared the crossbar, Nicola Champion had two efforts saved by the feet of the Liverton keeper.
Liverton’s first real effort of goal was a twenty yard effort by Lorna Thompson that crashed against the crossbar. Nicola Champion put her side four nil up when she was played into the right hand side of the Liverton box. Facing a defender she turned one way and then the other before firing the ball in at the near post.
The match referee blew up for the end of the first half, the Liverton Ladies stayed out on the pitch while the Saltash Woman headed for the dressing room.
The second half got underway and was a rather scrappy affair, but at least the Liverton defence had found the answers to their first half problems.Nicola Champion was still a threat and early in the half went on yet another strong run with a shot on the end saved by the keeper’s feet again.
Most of the goal mouth action had dried up and Liverton were unable to find their front players with any meaningful passes, it was more a case of kick and hope. The only two final efforts on goal worth noting was a a good shot just inside the Liverton box by Dee Newman. Yes you guessed it saved by the keepers feet and Hayley Ranachan’s effort after being played in neatly that went wide of the left hand post.
The sun had gone down and it became rather chilly and I was glad to hear the referees final whistle. Well done to the Saltash Woman on their first win of the season. Well done to the Liverton ladies for giving you all for the whole ninety minutes. Many thanks to the kind Liverton lady for sorting out the team sheets for me. Good luck to both teams for the rest of the season.
