Match Preview
I have already covered one Dartmouth Cup match this season, a first round tie between Harbertonford and Kingsteighton Athletic played on the 12th February which the Rams won by four goals to nil.
Report on that game here

My understanding is that this game is a quarter final tie but I am a bit confused about that due to poor information on the SDFL website. The site only shows three games played or about to be played in the first round. Neither Villa or the Bucks are shown as ever playing a first round match. If this is a quarter final match then in the next round for the other clubs still in the cup will only number three.
I could spend my Saturdays covering games at Buckland Athletic or Brixham AFC where I have no problems with team sheets being 100% correct safe in the knowledge I will be able to get all the information I need for my pre-match reports from their league websites. But I try to give as much coverage as I can to teams playing in the SDFL, but it always means another layer of unnecessary work and remember I do this all for free and make my reports and photos available and completely free to anyone who wants to use them. The SDFL league needs to get its act together better and raise its standards to the level of the leagues above it.
Paignton Villa is currently in 6th place in Division one on nineteen points after playing a total of fifteen games to date. They have won six of those games, drawn one and lost eight. They have scored a total thirty seven goals, conceded forty one giving them a minus four goal difference.
Buckfastleigh Rangers 2nd are one place below Villa in 7th place on ten points from fourteen games. They have won just the two games, drawn four and lost eight. They have scored a total of twenty goals, conceded thirty four giving them a minus fourteen goal difference.
The two teams met in the league on the 11th December at Villas South Devon College ground which Villa won by four goals to two. Villa come into the game on the back of three league wins on the trot and start as slight favourites to progress to the next stage of the Dartmouth Cup.
Buckfastleigh 2nds were awarded a home walkover last week end due to Kingskerswell & Chelston were unable to raise a side, sadly a problem for a number of teams playing in the SDFL.
On the 26th February Bucks were knocked out of the Fred Hewings Cup losing by four goals to three after extra time away to Chudleigh Athletic 3rd. On the 12th and 5th February Bucks played Beesands Rovers home and away and lost both of those fixtures. Apart from a cup win over Newton Rovers 2nd on the 29th January, you have to go back to the 4th September to find their last outright win where they beat lowly Upton Athletic by eight goals to one.
UPDATE lunchtime today
I have just received a message from Neil Hocking that explains the situation for this cup
Hi Dave. The Paignton Saints and Beesands Rovers game is a First Round tie and the winner goes straight through to the semi-finals (due to quarter-finalist Ashburton's withdrawal from the league). The other three games are quarter-finals. Thanks. Neil
Match Report
My first visit to the South Devon College sports centre and what a great facility it is, the 3g pitch looked superb and made the 3g pitch at Paignton Community college look old and tired. The only problem with it is the fact it is high up and very exposed. Today the wind was so strong there and it had some effect on the game for sure.
There are times at the end of some matches I feel a bit sorry for one of the teams that had played in the game. That was the case today for Buckfastleigh, their players all worked their socks off, but were beaten on the day by a very inform Paignton Villa side.
Match referee Sam Gill got the game underway and at the start it was a very even affair but it did not take Villa very long to score their first goal. Tom Parvin was played neatly into the Bucks box and hit an unstoppable shot into the back of the net, giving Brandon Barnard in goal for Buckfastleigh no chance of making a save.
Villa looked dangerous every time they were deep in the Buckfastleigh half, Villas Ashlie Salmon fancied his chances from the edge of the Bucks box, but failed to get any real power into his shot.
Villa were passing the ball that much better and nearly got a second goal, but Mathew Wicks who had an outstanding game in the Bucks defence made and excellent goal line clearance. Villa went close again when a cross into the box from the left hand side of the pitch found Alfie Lloyds. He turned neatly and got a shot away that was well pushed over the crossbar by Brandon Barnard.
Chances for Buckfastleigh were few and far between, Jacob Roberts did have a good chance to get his team back onto level terms, but his effort flew over the crossbar. Jerry Revell burst into the right hand side of the Villa box and hit a good low shot across the goal that was well saved low down by Kyle Lardner.
Villa went two goals in front when a high ball crashed onto the top of the Bucks crossbar; the ball fell kindly for Tom Parvin to fire home. Up the other end and George Davidson was played into the left hand side of the Villa box and got a shot away that only just went wide of the right hand post.
Villa made it three goals to nil when sub Richard Malone ran along the edge of the Bucks box, when he got to the middle he turned and hit a low shot into the left hand side of the goal.
Richard Malone played a big part in Villas forth goal, he hit a powerful shot from the edge of the box that stung the hands of the Bucks keeper who could only beat the ball down, Tom Parvin was at hand to fire the loose ball home.
Sam Gill blew up for halftime as the wind got even stronger, The main difference between the two sides in the first half was the Villa players followed the ball into the box and made sure they took the chances when they happened.
The second half got underway and the rain that was forecast for 3pm thankfully had not arrived. The half was only minutes old when Villa scored again. A long ball was played up to Harry Atkinson. Bucks keeper Kyle Lardner came rushing out to the edge of his box. Harry lifted the ball over the keeper and fired the ball into the back of the empty net.
Villa took their foot of the gas a bit with such a strong lead and ended up mainly taking pot shots from outside of the Bucks area. Alfie Lloyds hit a powerful shot that was blocked on route to the goal.
Bucks Russell Ellis then became the only player to find his name going into the referee’s notebook. He had the ball played past him and then body checked the Villa player running past him.
The Buckfastleigh players were still working hard and George Davidson hit a good shot from the edge of the Villa box that just went wide off the right hand post, I felt they fully deserved a goal at least, but it was not to be.
Villa’s Harry Atkinson had the chance to put his side further in front, but his effort from the edge of the box just cleared the crossbar. Josh Wren also had a good chance from just inside of the box, but the shot was well held by Brandon Barnard.
Buckfastleigh who had only arrived with just the eleven players went down to ten men when Ash Johnson limped off injured, but by then the game was as good as over as far as the result was concerned.
Villa sub Joe Windsor headed over but Villa were to get a sixth goal. Jamie Ford who had also came on as a sub received a great pass by Josh Wren that put him into the right hand side of the box. He picked his spot and the ball hit the back of the net.
A very enjoyable game played in difficult conditions, the score line might have been a bit harsh on Buckfastleigh who certainly made a game of it, but in football you have got to take the chances when they do come along.
Sam Gill had a wonderful game in the middle, got every decision right and played his part in this entertaining match. My thanks to him and both sets of managers for all your help with the team sheets.
