Match Referee Simon Blair
Final Score Brixham Town 5 Teign Village 2
Match Preview
Another Saturday and another cup match, this time a Ronald Cup Quarter Final match between Brixham Town and Teign Village. In my match report on the game between Brixham Town 2nd and East Allington 2nd in the Fred Hewings Cup 2nd round, I talked about Brixham Town’s new facility the JC Park, which they are currently not able to play any adult games on. I was saddened to read last week that local youths have visited the JC Park and caused damaged there. Such a shame for a club looking to improve and move forward, I personally fail to understand the mentality of those who feel it is aright to cause destruction with such mindless acts.

How Did Both Clubs Get Here
In the first round Brixham Town were away to Paignton Saints 3rd on the 12th February and won the game by five goals to nil.
Teign Village were also due to play their first round match on the 12th February away against cup favourites Watts Blake & Bearne but the game was called off due to a waterlogged pitch. The game was moved to the 26th March and Teign Village pulled off a surprise victory winning the game by two goals to one, their goal scorers were Mike Turner and Jamie Chegwin.
For those who do not know, Teign Village is a small mining village in the Teign Valley, on the fringes of the National Park. Built in the late nineteenth century to house the workers of a nearby quarry. You take a turn of the Teign Valley road into a very narrow lane. A mile or so later the lane opens up into a wide street with houses both sides before ending up as a narrow lane again at the end of the houses.

How Well Are Both Clubs Doing In The League
Brixham Town are enjoying a wonderful season and sit proudly in top spot of the division three table on a total of forty nine points from the seventeen games played to date. They have won sixteen of those games, drawn one and are unbeaten. Along the way they have scored a massive total of seventy three goals, conceded just fifteen giving them a plus fifty eight goal difference.
Teign Village are also doing well this season and sit in forth place in the league table on twenty five points but they have only played thirteen league games so far. They have won eight games, drawn one and lost four, scoring a total of forty four goals, conceded twenty two giving them a plus twenty two goal difference.
Back To Back This Season
Brixham Town hosted Teign Village in the league on the 19th March and won the game by two goals to one. On the 2nd October Brixham Town faced Teign Village away and won that game by four goals to three.
Will Town make it three victories this season over Teign Village? Both the league games were close as far as the score is concerned, it’s a cup game and I am sure the Quarrymen will arrive at Furzeham Green ready and willing to give it their best shot.
Match Report
A quarter final game worthy of being the final itself, but with two sets of super charged players on the pitch, it nearly got out of hand in the early stages. But match referee Simon Blair with the help of a few yellow cards and strong words soon got the game under control. Teign Village at halftime must have thought the game was won, but Brixham Town are not the league leaders and unbeaten for nothing. During the game at least seven piles of dog muck had to be picked up off the pitch, sadly there are a number of lazy dog owners who should know better as they would know football gets played on the park.
Simon blew up for the start of the match and Teign Village took a very early lead in the match. A Town defender decided to let the keeper come out to pick up the ball, but Mike Nolan beat the keeper to the loose ball and fired it home.
A few players lost their temper which resulted in Teigns Craig Stonelake and Towns Brendan Boddy being booked.not long later Teigns Matt Bojar also had his name taken by the match referee.
Town had a great chance to get back onto level terms. They won a free kick out on the right hand side of the pitch and the ball was fired high into the Teign box. Brendan Boddy had a clear header on goal, but was unable to get any real power into his effort. He had another headed chance just after this from a cross that came into the box from the left hand side, but he headed the ball straight into Jack Beer hands who was in goal for the Teigns.
Teign Village nearly went further in front when a low ball was played to the left hand edge of Towns box, Jamie Chegwin hit a low first time shot that only just went past the right hand post. But they did not have to wait too much longer to get their second goal. Jim Nolan was played into the right hand side of Towns box and coolly slotted the ball past Cam Atkinson into the far left hand corner of the goal.
A shock lead against the side that started as favourites to win this game and now it was all about how Town would respond, in any game of football its all about taking the chances when they come along and at this stage of the match that was Towns failing. Dalton Sanders did so well to rob the ball of a Teign player close to the touchline. He then ran into the left hand side of the box and played an inch perfect pass to Brendan Boddy. It had goal written all over it and yet Brendan failed to find the back of the net.
Towns Jack Turak went on a very strong run and got to the edge of the Teign box, he hit a good powerful shot that only just went wide of the post, another chance gone.
The match referee blew up for halftime, I said to the Town manager you now need to give the halftime team talk of your life, well it seems he must have.
The second half got underway and Town quickly got on top, Jack Turak hit a good shot from the edge of the Teign box that only just cleared the crossbar. The next goal was going to be a very important one, if Teign got it then it could have been game over, Town get it and its game on. Teigns Mike Turner did find himself inside the Town box and turned neatly, but his shot went wide of the left hand post.
It was Town who got the next goal, the ball was pinging around close to the goal line and I thought it was Brendan Boddy who got the last touch,( but it seems it was given as an OG), the Teign players were convinced the ball never crossed the goal line but the goal was given.
Shortly after this Town were back on level terms, they won a throw-in on the right hand side of the pitch. A long thrown-in was headed on at the near post to the far one and fired home by Dalton Sanders.
Town were very much on top now as they went in search of the winning goal. The chances were few an far between for the Teign players. Matt Bojar did try is luck from twenty yards out but the ball flew over the crossbar.
Town created another great chance when Josh Piper found himself inside the left hand side of the Teign box, but he shot wide of the target. The Teign goal was leading a charmed life, but Town were guilty of not taking the chances they were making. There was a big shout from the Town players for a penalty, but it was never one in a month of Sundays and the match referee was never going to give it.
The match referee blew up for the end of the second half and extra time needed to be played. In the first period Towns Dalton Sanders was played into the Teign box and forced Jack Beer into pulling off a fine save. There were no other clear cut chances during this first period.
The players turned around and shot after Town shot was being blocked on route to goal. But George Meradith hit a lovely clean shot from the edge of the box that hit the back of the net.
Town were in front for the first time in the match, could they hold onto the lead? In fact they went further in front when the Teign defence failed to stop a low cross coming into their box which found Josh Piper who hit the ball first time with his right boot into the back of the net.
Right at the death Town made it five goals to two, a long throw-in to the edge of the Teign box was hit first time by Stuart Pointon and the ball flew like a rocket into the top left hand corner of the goal.
The Teign players gave all they had, but Brixham Town were just too strong for them in the end, but I felt they did not deserve to lose by five goal to two, but that’s football for you.
Many thanks to both sets of managers today for filling in the correct numbers on the team sheets. Thanks to both sets of players for a very exciting game of football, two great sets of lads. Good luck to Brixham Town in the semi-final.
Foot note. Sadly due to another commitment I will not be able to cover a game next week, but I will be back the week after.
