Match Preview
It was not my plan to cover three games over this Bank Holiday weekend, but after being present at the Roy Holmes Memorial Match yesterday, I was unable to resist the draw of being at Homers Heath again today. My thoughts on yesterday’s events can be viewed here.

Both of today’s teams have made a good start to this new season and are unbeaten. Buckland currently sit in forth place in the table before today’s game on twelve points having played a total of six games. They have won three and drawn three and have a plus ten goal difference..
Exmouth town before today’s fixture were in sixth place in the table on eleven points having played one game less than Buckland. They had won three games, drawn two and had a plus thirteen goal difference.
The two teams recently played each other on Wednesday the 25th of August with a 19.30 pm kick-off and the game ended in a one all draw. Exmouth had led 1-0 for most of the game after Owen Howe’s early strike, but substitute Ryan Bush struck back with moments to go to earn his team a point.
The Exmouth manager Kevin Hill is one of my all time favourite former Torquay United players, hard working and an incredible leap and I am sure his influence has played a major part in the Exmouth team’s success.
It will be my first game with Paul Froude as the manager of Buckland Athletic, I do not know a lot about him but I am sure he is worthy of the job.
Match Report.
What a fantastic amazing game of football, full blooded action from the start to the finish, a game that had everything. Not like watching a boring international game where the team gets up to the opposition penalty box and then passes the ball back to their keeper.
Many of the Buckland players were new to me, but boy did they battle hard for today’s win, no ball was ever given up on and everyone was there to win. You had to be strong to survive out on that pitch today and the Buckland players showed they were.
Exmouth are a very good side with enough strong players of their own and made Buckland work has hard as they could because on the balance off play there was not a lot between both sides, but Buckland just had the edge.
The match referee blew for the start of the match and Buckland went straight on the attack, Levi Landricombe showed his intent by hitting a shot from the edge of the Exmouth box, but to be honest it was a rather wild effort that flew high over the crossbar.
Buckland were clearly on top in the early stages of the half, their keeper Andy Collings kicked a long ball to Josh Webber who played in Levi Landricombe who turned neatly in the box and got a shot away, but it lacked any real power to trouble Robbie Powell in goal for Exmouth.
Exmouth’s number seven Aarron Denny was in the Buckland box and was brought down by the keeper I think. The match referee pointed to the spot and the kick was taken by Jordan Harris who sent the keeper the wrong way.
Buckland looked to get back onto level terms as soon as they could and came close to doing so when one player went on a great run and hit a shot from the edge of the box that went just wide of the post. (could not see his number on his shirt)
But Buckland did indeed soon afterwards get the goal they were looking for, just Like Exmouth’s opening goal it was from the penalty spot. I believe it was Levi Landricombe who was pushed in the Exmouth box, Ben Carter took the spot kick and while the keeper went the right way, the shot was to low and powerful just inside the left hand post for him to save.
Charlie Johansen was the first player to receive a yellow card, but there were more shown throughout match. It was now end to end action, one second a Buckland defender cleared the ball of the goal line and seconds later Levi Landricombe was in the Exmouth box and got a shot away that just went wide of the post.
The referee blew up for halftime and as the players trotted off, It was impossible to predict which team if any was going to win this match.
The second half got underway and Buckland were on the attack, there was a big shout for handball in the Exmouth box that was not given, but seconds later the referee blew up and pointed to the spot for a foul on a Buckland player. Up stepped ever dependable Ben Carter who could teach some England Internationals how to take a spot kick as he fired the ball home giving his team the lead for the first time in the match.
The game was in danger of getting out of control with an off the ball incident, but the ref soon got the matter under control booking a Bucks player in the process.
Exmouth upped their game moving up a gear and looked dangerous every time they burst into the Buckland half. They were clearly on top now, but could not convert all their hard work into a meaningful chance.
Buckland were content to try and break on the counter attack and one such move saw Ben Carter shoot wide of the post from the edge of the Exmouth box.
Exmouth really should have got themselves back on level terms when Ben Steer was close in on goal and had it at is mercy, I am not sure how he missed and I bet he was thinking the same.
Up the other end and Josh Webber did well to beat the last defender and only had the keeper to beat to make the game safe for Buckland, but he shot wide of the post, but he had a fantastic and could be excused for the miss.
Sadly near the end Bucks Owen Stockman was shown a second yellow card with a red to follow, But Buckland now down to ten men held firm and deservedly won the match,
You will not see a better match than this was, credit to both sides for making it such an entertaining game.
